Historia
While investigating a fairly straightforward case of a shape-shifting interdimensional child predator, Dave, John, and Amy realized there might actually be something weird going on. Together, they navigate a diabolically convoluted maze of illusions, lies, and their own incompetence in an attempt to uncover a terrible truth they - like you - would be better off not knowing.

Great Read! ...possible spoilers?
Revisado: 06-25-24
This is the first Pargin book I have ever read and I loved the humor and the fast-paced style. I hate being bored by books or pushing through and tolerating a book for a so-so ending, but this book just kept moving. I do wish the final entity/creature was dealt with instead of leaving it "unfinished," but the book was so fun, and the imagination in it was so packed I didn't mind the ending. Very well read by the narrator and I will be reading John Dies at the End next.

A ton of copycat gossip apps have popped up since Simon died, but in the year since the Bayview four were cleared of his shocking death, no one's been able to fill the gossip void quite like he could. The problem is no one has the facts. Until now. This time it's not an app, though - it's a game. Truth or Dare. Phoebe's the first target. If you choose not to play, it's a truth. And hers is dark. Then comes Maeve, and she should know better - always choose the dare. But by the time Knox is about to be tagged, things have gotten dangerous.

good read
Revisado: 04-05-24
I would recommend this book because it wasn't boring and was well written an the story was entertaining enough to keep me reading but I'm not sure what category this book is. didn't feel or read much like a mystery. One of Us is Lying was better and I'd still say that one was just all right too. I didn't feel like this was a waste of my time but it didn't have me on the edge of my seat or anything and didn't have me reeling. the literal last paragraph was, for me, the most interesting part of the whole book...

Fun read, and actors were excellent
Revisado: 03-23-24
I very much enjoyed the story. I'd certainly recommend it to others. I'm only giving it 3 stars because there was nothing in the book that stood out to me as super unique or stellar. The characters are well written, and the story flows nicely but I wasn't blown away. To be honest, I'm probably being harsher than necessary because in all my years reading mysteries I have yet to find a mystery book that I haven't figured out well before the end or at least was in the ballpark of. I'd love to read a mystery book that totally wrecks my mind and takes me by complete surprise, so if anyone has suggestions I'm all ears. As with most mysteries I've read, there tends to be one line or paragraph that makes the ending incredibly obvious and this book was no exception. I had a feeling I knew who'd done it and it only took one seemingly off the cuff comment to prove me right and like all the other mysteries I've read I kept going until the end just to know where the writer wanted to take me, but it was right where I'd thought. Again, this was still a very good book. entertaining, good character development. and I liked the growth the characters experienced. The reveal with Cooper was a nice surprise. This was my 1st book by McManus and I will be reading One of Us is Next after this to give this author another shot because I did enjoy this read, it just wasn't a 5 star for me personally.

Good, but I think it could have been great...
Revisado: 08-25-23
I feel like this book had the potential to blow me away but instead it seemed to just flop a bit.
It sort of felt like 3 different stories that all happened to be going on around the same time and place. The first story felt like a splatterpunk lust story between a newly turned zombie girl and a newly turned vampire girl and I wasn't really feeling it. Then the middle bit was the story of a newly turned serial killer realizing she really got off on murder which I didn't hate but it felt sudden and misplaced. The last bit of the book I LOVED with epic beasts and cosmic lovecraftian horror. I loved it all the way up to the end. I didn't care for the ending. It felt wildly abrupt and like the author was trying to figure out how to end it and was running out of time ao she scrambled an ending together and slapped it on like a bandaid...
The ideas in the third part of the book were excellent and I wish she would have cut out or maybe drastically reduced the first two story lines and expanded a lot more on the third section and really found a solid ending, even a cliffhanger of an ending where you're left wondering and this book could have been GREAT. It felt like too many moving parts that almost fit, but not quite.
Very well written. Great verbiage and descriptive prowess. I liked the overall ideas and the writing style but for me the story fell flat.
The voice actresses all did an amazing job, so shout out to them!

Revisado: 07-18-23
I've been avoiding this book for quiet a while simply because I am not a huge fan of ghost stories or haunted houses they just tend to bore the hell out of me. Frienda have been telling me to read it because it was good and im glad i fonally listened. This story was fantastic. well written, well told. I loved the ads throughout and how they changed when things started to get darker. just all around great book and a fun read and will maybe encourage me to try more haunted house stories.

Excellent!
Revisado: 07-06-23
While it has been compared to American Psycho, and I will admit has some American Psycho vibes among it's pages, Maeve Fly is completely its own unique story. As a whole I loved American Psycho but to be honest it was a boring read for me. Just too much on and on and on about the clothing and food and who is sporting what jewelry and cards and yada yada. And I understand that is largely the point, Bateman's obsession with things and objects along side his apparent indifference for human life, but I digress. This was NOT the case with Maeve Fly. It was exciting from start to finish and the ending was beautifully brutal. I love when I don't really like a main character but am still so hooked I can't walk away because I need to know how it ends. That is how I felt with this book. While you may not love Maeve you can't help but feel something for her and for me personally I could identify with her lonliness even if much of it was self imposed. CJ Leede has written a wonderfully bleak and bloody work of art. Great story! I definitely recommend it. Also because I must give her credit, Sosie Bacon did an amazing job. And if you haven't seen Smile, go watch it she was wonderful in that, and it was a great movie.

Everyone in my family has killed someone. Some of us, the high achievers, have killed more than once. I’m not trying to be dramatic, but it is the truth. Some of us are good, others are bad, and some just unfortunate. I’m Ernest Cunningham. Call me Ern or Ernie. I wish I’d killed whoever decided our family reunion should be at a ski resort, but it’s a little more complicated than that.

loved the characters and the story telling. I've become numb to so many mystery books because I guess the killer/culprit eons before the end and then I'm annoyed because I think "well, duh. You told us in like chapter 3. Was no one paying attention?" I have to say I definitely speculated and figured some of it out before the end but not all of it so I was very pleased. the approach to this story was probably my favorite thing about it. it was a unique and engaging approach to the story telling.

3 out of 5
Revisado: 03-06-23
the story was alright but the reader was stiff and robotic. his reading was very strange. I have listened to some terrible audio recordings in the past but still loved the book because in the end it was still a great story. this was not one of those times unfortunately. the story was just alright and for a book I've seen on multiple lists for one of the best mysteries of all time I was disappointed. mind you, this is just my opinion and if someone was to ask me "should I give this book a read?" is say yes because it wasn't bad by any means. I just didn't love it.

It was alright
Revisado: 11-18-22
Kind of just alright. (there may be spoilers in this rant). Very gruesome but I like that. Gruesome is half the reason this book interested me. It was EXTREMELY well written. Decent depth of characters but for me it all sort of fell a little short. I had heard so many things about this book and how great it was and maybe I hyped it up too much so it felt underwhelming. I felt like the actual story, the plot and rise and fall of it was a little linear. The book felt like it was 90% explanation of characters and what they had going on and 10% forward moving story. I kind of felt like I was waiting for Jay and Andrew to cross paths for a long time. On that same note we were given a ton of information about Tran and Luke but I had no idea where their storylines were going or why or how it mattered to Jay and Andrew. I got a little bored hearing about Tran and his life for a bit there. The end when they all collided was meh for me. It didn't have my heart pumping the way I thought it would I was just kind of like oh, ok. That being said I adored the way the two killers were written. Two homosexual killers both focused on killing homosexual boys could be dicey as far as sounding redundant but each killer was vastly different from the other and that made it great especially when they came together. Also, the narrator was fantastic, just wonderful. So well read and very engaging.
