Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Very different Poirot - but loved it!
Revisado: 12-23-24
I am a huge Poirot fan - and have loved David Suchet, Hugh Fraser and John Moffat performing/narrating. Was not expecting to like an unfamiliar cast and new take on Christie’s first ever Poirot story.

Historia
All great crime writers have their favourite creations. Similarly, every great sleuth has his, or her, own preferred method of deduction. Take the charming Parker Pyne, who relies upon an intuitive knowledge of human nature to solve the 'Problem at Pollensa Bay'. Or Mr Satterthwaite, who seeks inspiration through his collaboration with the enigmatic Mr Quin in 'The Harlequin Tea Set' mystery. Then, of course, there's Poirot, whose measured analysis of motive and opportunity is tested to the full in 'Yellow Iris', when he receives an anonymous call about a matter of life and death.

Love Hugh Fraser, great selection of stories
Revisado: 10-26-24
I am extremely fond of listening to ‘Hastings’ (Hugh Fraser) narrating Agatha Christie so probably biased. However, love this collection of stories as it encompasses so many different repeating characters …Poirot, Parker Pyne, Harley Quinn … love it!!!

Cute Hero/Heroine. Great performance!

Freddy makes a refreshing and unexpected hero. I thought Ghatak did a great job of all the different accents/genders.

Historia
A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation starring John Moffatt as Hercule Poirot. Mrs Farrars is found dead of an apparent overdose one year after the death of her husband. The villagers of King's Abbot are suspicious. The rumour is that she poisoned her husband and was in love with Roger Ackroyd. When he is found murdered the following day, there is little to go on. Luckily one of the newest residents who has retired to this normally quiet village is none other than Monsieur Hercule Poirot.

Love John Moffat as Poirot
Revisado: 05-22-24
Never thought I could listen to anyone other than David Suchet as Poirot but John Moffat is really great! This is one of the best Poirot novels - love the fact that Christie broke all the rules when she wrote this. Well adapted by the BBC :)

First there was the mystery of the film star and the diamond...then came the "suicide" that was murder...the mystery of the absurdly cheap flat...a suspicious death in a locked gun-room...a million dollar bond robbery...the curse of a pharoah's tomb...a jewel robbery by the sea...the abduction of a Prime Minister...the disappearance of a banker...a phone call from a dying man...and, finally, the mystery of the missing will.

Beakers and ball gowns don’t mix. So when lady chemist and avowed spinster Miss Liliana Claremont receives a coveted invitation to the earl of Stratford’s house party, no one expects her to accept. After all, it’s well known Lord Geoffrey Wentworth, a rising political star, is in need of a suitable bride, and it’s assumed he will choose one from the select group of attendees. Yet Liliana has no desire to lure the rich and powerful earl into marriage. She’s come to Somerton Park for one reason - to uncover what the Wentworths had to do with the murder of her father.

Good story, strange vowels but fluent performance overall
Revisado: 11-24-22
Had already read this book, and admit that ‘classic’ regency from Georgette Heyer and others is more historically plausible, but I am just getting into historical romances on audible so I thought I would try it. I normally listen to detective stories, philosophy and political books. I found it disconcerting to listen to the intimate passages; somehow it is easier to read them! The other odd thing for me was the way the narrator pronounced some words with a short ‘a’ like ‘brash’, ‘mass’ or ‘battle’ with a long ‘ah’ like ‘calm’ or ‘papa’. It was weird. The ‘o’ was also strange at times, Wondered if she was an American doing an English accent? Anyway - otherwise a lovely voice, fluent performance and lots of variation between characters.

Abuse of Power
Revisado: 12-04-19
My heart goes out to Andrew McCabe, James Comey, Ambassador Yovanovitch and others whose jobs have been torn from them by this spoilt toddler of a president. America, please impeach him and remove him before he does even more harm!
