I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read, the narration was great, and I learned something new. I thought the author did a great job covering an unusual main character and demonstrating the nuances inherent in her personality and psyche. Enjoyed the twist at the end .

It took me a while to warm up to the beginning of this book simply because I could not relate to (or entirely believe in) such a self deprecating main character who has already gotten to where she is in NYC. Also, I care little for gossip and traditional glossy magazine style stories for women, however, the title character, Evelyn Hugo is a force to be reckoned with and a multiple time glass ceiling breaker. Hugo’s character is imbued with depth, humor, tragedy, wisdom, honesty and ruthlessness and her character and life story keep the plot moving. The narrator is pretty unforgettable but the novel progresses quickly once Evelyn becomes the focus. A smashing read and I’m only sorry that I will never get the chance to meet the fictional Evelyn Hugo.

Another great Harlan Coben story that does not disappoint in its twists and turns, well fleshed out characters, and truth for its genre. Can’t wait to read the next one.

This was not only well researched, it had an incredible depth of character that drew me in and kept me interested for the duration. This is a wonderful story about the woman who had to be married to the king of cruelty who took it upon himself to tame her humanity out of her, and failed. A triumph in the literary canon of mythical retelling!

Great reimagining from women’s point of view

I would have rated it higher if it had been truer to the experience of women living in that time period. A lot of liberties were taken that took me out of the realm of believability as it would for anyone who studied the history and gender roles of the time period but overall the story was an interesting new imagining of the women of that time.

This was a quick, fun, read, and I appreciate that the novel stuck to the standard cozy, mystery genre. The main character, a middle-aged, Chinese-American business owner, was fun and delightful, and her antics and quirks. I appreciated the younger, dynamic characters as well. It was a typical mystery where everyone has something to hide, with a heart warming ending where their lives are made better for having gone out on a limb to try to solve the mystery and join forces.

I did guess the killer in advance, but I have no reservations about that because I was kept guessing for at least 2/3 of the story, and there were other plot questions to be untangled. The longer I got to know the characters, the more I liked each of them and cared about their ending. Looking forward to more in the series. Light, fun heartwarming read.

It was entertaining and a quick listen. The narrator was great. I enjoyed the supporting characters more than the main character but overall it was enjoyable for a deal of the day and all the story structure was there.

I would read future books from this author if there’s an older main character. The young age of the MC probably places this in MG or YA genre.

This has been a very helpful podcast for me as a writer of poetry. Too often we have workshop after workshop, that discusses only craft, or how to read, review, and critique the work of others. This is one of the missing pieces of the pie, which is concerned primarily with the industry and profession of writing poetry and publishing. Noah Stetzer and Ross White are thoughtful readers, editors, writers, and publishers who have assembled this podcast to help provide a path forward for others. They unravel the definition of what a chapbook is, what they look for in a body of collected work, and the considerations that go into publishing one. Much appreciated! Highly recommend starting at podcast 1.

Not a complete novel, doesn’t meet expectations of genre

I really enjoyed the main character and could see myself reading or listening to future episodes in the MC’s crime series except for two egregious things:

1. This is not a complete novel with a full arc of character and plot, this is half a novel in which the reader must pick up the next novel in order to discover how the first one ends. This is unforgivable for the crime/thriller genre where readers expect a satisfying ending to the initial questions. It is acceptable for this genre to open a new crime or suspicion to be followed up on in a subsequent novel but not to leave the reader hanging as this one does. This appears to have ended in the middle of a chapter.

2. I almost put it down three times when I realized this was entering the undisclosed genre of Christian fiction and not crime fiction. As I do not know how the first novel ends it is hard to say whether the subsequent novels in the series should be placed in this genre but I feel cheated because my expectation for the crime genre was not met and it’s dubious how this book was classified.

Too bad for me because I love this genre and particularly love female protagonists. This appeared to be a good match for me at the outset, but I’m good with just having the read the 7/8ths of a novel that this turned out to be. The main character was well executed, and the love interest and his son were well executed but the antagonist was somewhat unbelievable (casting doubt on the main character’s integrity and ability as a police officer and chief of police) and the “ending” is unresolved.

Narrator was okay for me.

This is a disgusting story about repeated rapes that are framed in a lustful “she wants it” context by the author. The characters are shallow and there’s so little backstory/character development that I never cared for the main character before she was thrown into misogynistic situations that she didn’t handle well. The “penises” of the three antagonist make characters get about as much personality and character development as their minds do. Besides the fact that this is boring and offensive, it’s also unrealistic and damaging to women and foster care children everywhere.
