Historia
As his mother was dying, Philip Kennicott began to listen to the music of Bach obsessively. It was the only music that didn't seem trivial or irrelevant, and it enabled him to both experience her death and remove himself from it. He spent the next five years trying to learn one of the composer's greatest keyboard masterpieces, the Goldberg Variations. In Counterpoint, he recounts his efforts to rise to the challenge, and to fight through his grief by coming to terms with his memories of a difficult, complicated childhood.

Bach, to ease grief? Why Note
Revisado: 06-16-23
I enjoyed this very much. We all lose our parents, friends, dogs, so why not consult the greatest music ever written to help with grief, to find purpose, and perhaps for a bit, discover aspects of life that will appear meaningful. A sad story, a sad ending. Like Gilgamesh, we are all search for meaning when a life ends, the author pursued his passion to play the Goldberg variations to soothe his grief and to find in Bach's chaconne the hidden messages that could help him figure out his mom and his relationship to her. To play bach is to live, love, and know lost.

Extraordinary story
Revisado: 01-15-23
An erudite (often amusing) introspection into the life of a brilliant man troubled by his own thoughts and intelligence, by his ancestry, his friends, the grocer, the cops, his ex wives, his lovers, the universe, and himself. To soothe his despair he writes letters to the transgressors that haunt his world. Provocative! This is a book of special characters, as in people.

Historia
One fateful evening, journalist Eric Siblin attended a recital of Johann Sebastian Bach's Cello Suites and began an epic quest that would unravel three centuries of intrigue, politics, and passion. Winner of the Mavis Gallant Prize for Nonfiction and the McAuslan First Book Prize, The Cello Suites weaves together three dramatic narratives: the disappearance of Bach's manuscript in the 18th century; Pablo Casals's discovery and popularization of the music in Spain in the late-19th century; and Siblin's infatuation with the suites in the present day.

Historia
Peter Guillam, staunch colleague and disciple of George Smiley of the British Secret Service, otherwise known as the Circus, is living out his old age on the family farmstead on the south coast of Brittany when a letter from his old service summons him to London. The reason? His Cold War past has come back to claim him. Intelligence operations that were once the toast of secret London, and involved such characters as Alec Leamas, Jim Prideaux, George Smiley, and Peter Guillam himself, are to be scrutinized by a generation with no memory of the Cold War.

Fantastic! All of Smiley’s loose ends
Revisado: 08-13-22
The narrator was fantastic, the story brings all of Smiley’s people to a close. I hated to hear the final words, I didn’t want it to end. And of course, George is now finally the age he always looked to be.
Marvelous, intelligent, passionate writing! I’ll miss George and LeCarre!
Highly recommend as your final book in the Smiley novels.

Stunning, gripping, shamefully real
Revisado: 07-06-21
This story is told with such care and tenderness, yet the “horrors” that are the victim girls lives are never hidden. Somehow the author provides hope to the victim girls, hope during and hope after. All the characters, main and ancillary are so real. Every word is essential, nothing is superfluous. The author handles this delicate subject with artistry.
The narrator is fabulous. A perfect choice!
