Historia
Through extensive interviews with the closest friends, lovers, and relatives of Onassis and the Kennedys, longtime journalist Evans has uncovered the shocking culmination of the Kennedy-Onassis-Kennedy love triangle: Aristotle Onassis was at the heart of the plot to kill Bobby Kennedy. Meticulously tracing Onassis's connections in the world of terrorism, Nemesis presents compelling evidence that he financed the assassination - including a startling confession that has gone unreported for nearly three decades.

Great Story . . . Performance not so great
Revisado: 12-08-21
This story revealed so many things about the Kennedys and the Onasis family that were unfamiliar to me. It is a great uncovering of events that affected the world.
I was disappointed, however, with Michael Murray's performance. It seemed to follow a pattern that did not waiver throughout the book, regardless of what was being described or stated. Many quotations were followed by "he said". The often-used phrase, "he said" sounded like a question in his intonation.

No Hip Hop Here
Revisado: 11-23-21
With the huge success of the musical HAMILTON, one might be excused for thinking that Alexander Hamilton was an amazing 18th Century performer.
As Ron Chernow brilliantly tells his story, one realises that he WAS a great performer; full of energy and passion. But his performances were seen in his writing, courage, intellect, and wit. Chernow's extraordinary research is clearly obvious as he brings Hamilton, his contemporaries, and the times in which they lived, to life.
I have found Grover Gardner to be one of the best narrators on Audible, and he certainly delivers in this book. Chernow & Gardner make a great partnership.

In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

A story well told
Revisado: 09-03-21
Steve Martin tells his story in an unpretentious and approachable way. He sews together events in his life that take him from an underaged Disney employee to stardom. The book reminds me of a past in which I grew up. It is judiciously funny and candid. I was sad when it finished.

Historia
Everyone knows the story of Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1865, but few are aware of the original conspiracy to kill him four years earlier in 1861, literally on his way to Washington, DC, for his first inauguration. The conspirators were part of a pro-Southern secret society that didn't want an antislavery President in the White House. They planned an elaborate scheme to assassinate the brand new President in Baltimore as Lincoln's inauguration train passed through en route to the Capitol.

Untold Story
Revisado: 12-09-20
Meltzer and Mensch tell a story of Lincoln that I, and probably many others, have never heard. The details of the unsuccessful plot to kill the 16th President are fascinating. The narration, I'm afraid, could have been better. It is told with breathless drama throughout, without a variation of tone within the story. That becomes tiresome and detracts from the real drama of the critical events.

Mountaintop Murders
Revisado: 11-28-20
Jo Nesbo is a master at creating crime drama. In The Kingdom, he places the drama atop a remote mountaintop in his home country of Norway. And this book is as dark as a Norwegian Winter. It is not difficult to tell the “good guys” from the “bad guys” because, in The Kingdom, the “good guys” are AWOL. The characters are complicated and intriguing. And Nesbo keeps us wondering what awful thing will happen next on this mountain where the story is set. There are times when I thought similes were stretched and used to excess. But I was still held hostage by the compelling prose that kept me listening. Euan Morton’s narration was great, as was the translation by Robert Ferguson (although I do not speak Norwegian). This book would lend itself well to a 10-part streaming video binge!

Historia
Italy 1944 is the setting of one of the most convincing and quietly magnificent stories about man and war that has ever been written. They were young when they left and sang as they sailed down the Clyde. They didn't know where they were going and they didn't really care. They didn't want to fight and they hardly knew what the war was about. Here, distilled from the experiences and observations of the author, who served in Italy in the British infantry, is the story of those who fought and died at Anzio.

War is Hell
Revisado: 11-02-20
My father served at Anzio, and I have read several books about the conflict, the politics, the strategies, the individual battles, the mistakes, the heroism and the outcome. But none of those presented the personal stories in the way that William Woodruff and Sam Kelly do in this book. You can feel the soldiers’ fatigue, frustrations, and fear. It is a depressing story told with compassion for both sides; for the men and women who suffered and died. And of those who lived, and would have to live with those nightmares through the remainder of their lives. Including my father.

Historia
Here at last is a history of England that is designed to entertain as well as inform and that will delight the armchair traveler, the tourist, or just about anyone interested in history. No people have engendered quite so much acclaim or earned so much censure as the English: extolled as the Athenians of modern times, yet hammered for their self-satisfaction and hypocrisy. But their history has been a spectacular one.
