I enjoyed this book very much. My one complaint is that Arthur Morey (reading the "Barry" POV) is (and sounds) too old. I heard Gary Shteyngart read an excerpt on City Arts & Lectures and much prefer his reading voice - I wish he'd recorded the audiobook himself.

Female POV narrated by a man?!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator - a man - was totally inappropriate for this book, which should have been narrated by a young (or young-sounding) woman. The "ethnic" accents he adopts for characters with international-sounding names are especially terrible, including offensive versions of what seem intended to be Spanish/Mexican, Indian/Southeast Asian, and indeterminate Middle Eastern-ish.

Any additional comments?

The story has some interesting ideas but is full of holes and is badly/lazily written at points.

What disappointed you about A Clash of Kings?

Most specifically, Roy Dotrice's narration is unbearable.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Use another narrator.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

As read by Mr. Dotrice, Westeros (and environs) is peopled almost entirely by trolls, goblins, elves, crones, and a few regular guys (young and old). The characters are given such horrible voices that it's difficult to hear past them - Tyrion, for example, is read as a simple-minded cockney (i.e., low class) house elf, which is totally wrong.

Reluctantly Dislike

I have mixed feelings about this book: The writing is good enough and the story is engaging, but there came a point -- perhaps 2/3 of the way through -- where the story became too disturbing for me and I had to stop listening to it. Significantly, this is the first time that has ever happened to me: Sometimes a story becomes upsetting and I need to read the synopsis on Wikipedia to find out what's going to happen before I can proceed (e.g., A Fine Balance), but this is the first time that I read the synopsis and still decided to quit, despite thinking it was a perfectly well-written book. I just found some of the plot points -- and one of the characters -- too unpleasant. I loved The Time Traveler's Wife, however, and will continue to follow Niffenegger's writing for the time being.
