Historia
Wright Thompson’s family farm in Mississippi is 23 miles from the site of one of the most notorious and consequential killings in American history, yet he had to leave the state for college before he learned the first thing about it. To this day, fundamental truths about the crime are widely unknown, including where it took place and how many people were involved. This is no accident: the cover-up began at once, and it is ongoing.

Historia
Giving voice to the voiceless, the Chicago Defender condemned Jim Crow, catalyzed the Great Migration, and focused the electoral power of black America. Robert S. Abbott founded the Defender in 1905, smuggled hundreds of thousands of copies into the most isolated communities in the segregated South, and was dubbed a "Modern Moses", becoming one of the first black millionaires in the process.

Magnificent Book
Revisado: 09-18-24
This is an important story, masterfully told. I knew much of the history recounted but I had never filtered it through the story of the Black press.

Historia
Just yesterday, Ben was a petty criminal getting by on fleecing New York’s one-percenters. Today, he's got a new face, a new name, and a new world to navigate. And Ben’s thinking maybe this time around, he’ll use his skills at disarming and deceiving to help out people other than himself. Maybe. Watching a medieval City Guard fight off a 20-foot-tall ooze that crawled up from the sewers will make you think twice about life decisions.

Revisado: 01-03-21
excellent reading of pretty good storytelling at least until.the abrupt and artlessly cliffhanging ending. Much credit to the narrator and producer. The author should be ashamed, even if some editor made him do this.

Warning: Doesnt end. Just stops!
Revisado: 08-25-19
Do yourself a favor and wait to buy this until the next book comes out. The ending mascarades as a cliff-hanger but feels more like a deadline was looming so he just stopped writing and hit send. It is beautifully written and masterfully narrated. But, the ending is a beyrayal of loyal readers/ listeners.

Historia
She was covered from head to toe in expensive wool and plaid, the sort of stuff one saw at the Burberry boutique in Harrods. She carried a leather bookbag rather than a nylon backpack. Her patent leather ballet slippers were glossy and bright. She was proper, the new girl, modest. But there was something else about her.... At an exclusive private school in Switzerland, mystery surrounds the identity of the beautiful raven-haired girl who arrives each morning in a motorcade fit for a head of state. She is said to be the daughter of a wealthy international businessman.

Apologia for MBS
Revisado: 07-20-19
Silva's novels are all 3 parts fun and adventure to one part political screed. (A few of them get the ratio wrong.) To use the screed part of this one to try to rehabilitate the murderous dictator of Saudi Arabia is to make this the Alon novel most will wish had not existed.

What drug lords learned from big business. How does a budding cartel boss succeed (and survive) in the $300 billion illegal drug business? By learning from the best, of course. From creating brand value to fine-tuning customer service, the folks running cartels have been attentive students of the strategy and tactics used by corporations such as Walmart, McDonald's, and Coca-Cola.

Why choose a reader with ZERO Spanish?
Revisado: 07-04-19
The story is fascinating and the writing is very clear. The performance would have been improved 100 percent by 15 minutes of pronunciation coaching by a 14yo high school freshman in Spanish I. I don't expect perfection. But, this was ridiculous and worse, distracting.

Worst Editing I've Ever Heard
Revisado: 02-05-19
The content of the book is so strong as to overcome the shamefully slipshod editing. the narrators draft segments appear as though they were a part of the narrative followed by the intended segments throughout. This culminates in two readings of the afterword.

Historia
Most history is hierarchical: it's about emperors, presidents, prime ministers, and field marshals. It's about states, armies, and corporations. It's about orders from on high. Even history "from below" is often about trade unions and workers' parties. But what if that's simply because hierarchical institutions create the archives that historians rely on? What if we are missing the informal, less well documented social networks that are the true sources of power and drivers of change?

More History Less Political Commentary Please
Revisado: 04-14-18
Like too much of Ferguson's recent work, this book can't resist trite political commentary to the detriment of a really interesting and important subject. One minute , I'm engrossed in a reasoned and interesting treatment of the history of hierarchy and network. The next, it's "Because it has more words than the Magna Carta, Dodd Frank is the end of representative government and the rise of the administrative state." Eventually, the scholarship stops being worth the trouble of digging through the soundbites.
