Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

I am going to listen to this book a second time because it was so good and I learned so much. The reader doesn’t exceptional job, but the book itself lays out so many issues that I did not either know about or appreciate. Must read for every bookclub!

An amazingly quick read due to its very captivating style and topic
Revisado: 08-12-24
Thank you for sharing this story of your life, Rich. It was very captivating. It is very hard for anyone to understand another journey, but this book is very well written and helps to shed light on the path that so many have taken and the differing outcomes that are possible based on, an intricacy of possibilities.

Historia
In recent years, the high-profile murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many others have brought much-needed attention to the pervasiveness of police misconduct. Yet it remains nearly impossible to hold police accountable for abuses of power—the decisions of the Supreme Court, state and local governments, and policy makers have, over decades, made the police all but untouchable. In Shielded, University of California, Los Angeles, law professor Joanna Schwartz exposes the myriad ways in which our legal system protects police at all costs.

Prof Schwartz is one of the best storytellers ever
Revisado: 02-03-24
I can’t get over the impression this book made on me. It will definitely affect me for the rest of my life in a very positive way. Not only does professor Schwartz tell the history in a way that nobody has pulled together, but her reading skills are beyond measure. Her narration brings all of these characters and their histories to life, and makes an indelible and profound impact.

This was done so well and tracks so well to what I know about the history in spite of the fact that it’s fiction. I really did appreciate the entirety of the story, and the author did a fantastic job researching before writing

So motivational and inspirational
Revisado: 09-27-23
I found this book to be so helpful, well written, and eloquently read by the author. It provides a lot of insight into topics that I did not even understand growing up even though I was in a high school where about 40% of my classmates were black boys and girls. Thank you for sharing all of your painful history and stories and taking us on the first part of your journey, Ms. Prescod. I do hope that you write further in forums like this as I don’t read fashion magazines, and know very little about fashion.

Historia
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

Phenomenal, historical and interpretive art piece
Revisado: 03-20-23
I thought that I understood the subject well, going into this book. However, listening to it has helped me to understand how many issues have been presented through the white person’s lens especially in education.
This is a must read and should be on everyone’s shortlist especially in high school.

Historia
Tornadoes, cyclones, tsunamis… Weather can be deadly – especially when it strikes without warning. Millions of Americans could soon find themselves at the mercy of violent weather if the public data behind lifesaving storm alerts gets privatized for personal gain. In his first Audible Original feature, New York Times best-selling author and journalist Michael Lewis delivers hard-hitting research on not-so-random weather data – and how Washington plans to release it.

Fascinating history of forecasting
Revisado: 11-05-22
I bought this book a while ago so I had not recalled the premise of it when listening to it. I often do that so that I can enjoy a read without any anticipation of what is coming. In any event, this was a great narration of a great piece of journalism. I highly recommend it for anybody who wanders about the future of data availability to the public in the importance to the public good of such data.

Caution- There is abuse in this one
Revisado: 11-03-22
I love Lisa Jewell’s novels, as mystery is my favorite genre, but this one will leave a disturbing mark on some. It does involve elder and child abuse in various forms. It is well performed and I listened to the end, but it is tough in spots but not because of any violent or graphic element as to the abuse.

But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Inspiring and provocative
Revisado: 10-14-22
I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s viewpoint and, in particular, his insight into his own experiences, regardless of the amount of fiction in the underlying story. It was the facts that touched on real world experiences that made the story feel so personal and real. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is willing to hear about the challenges that so many in society face on a daily basis.
