Historia
Eli's Promise is a masterful work of historical fiction spanning three eras—Nazi-occupied Poland, the American Zone of post-war Germany, and Chicago at the height of the Vietnam War. Award-winning author Ronald H. Balson explores the human cost of war, the mixed blessings of survival, and the enduring strength of family bonds.

Excellent WWII historical fiction
Revisado: 01-04-25
This novel was very engaging and compelling. I’ve read many similar books but the stories of the victims of the holocaust will never become stale. Although I don’t shy away from the horrors when they are integral to the narrative, I was appreciative of Mr. Balson’s ability to tell his story as gently as he did.

Hard to keep up with characters
Revisado: 10-20-24
Author failed to develop characters so I struggled to keep characters and names straight. This was distracting and annoying.

Amazing and powerful.
Revisado: 09-19-24
I read the first book a few years ago and it took me quite a while to get invested in this second book. I’m so grateful I didn’t give up. This book was simply amazing. Inspiring, yes. Moving, yes. But so much more… as a believer I’m encouraged to seek this level of identification with Yeshua, with Jesus. I’m convicted to examine my grievances and fears in order to lay them down as encumbrances. What a wonder. I am reminded that I am my Father’s much loved daughter. He is the way, the truth and the life. Thank you, Ted Dekker for putting your heart and your imagination into a novel that blessed me so deeply.

Historia
Born into slavery on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat, Doll bought her freedom from her Irish planter father and built a legacy of wealth and power as an entrepreneur, merchant, hotelier, and planter that extended from the marketplaces and sugar plantations of Dominica and Barbados to a glittering luxury hotel in Demerara on the South American continent. Vanessa Riley’s novel brings Doll to vivid life as she rises above the harsh realities of slavery and colonialism by working the system and leveraging the competing attentions of the men in her life

Heroic but not admirable
Revisado: 01-29-24
Dolly Kirwan Thomas was undeniably brave, strong, heroic and forceful. She was also very unlikeable, even repugnant in many ways. The author was able to illuminate both her strengths and her seriously flawed nature. Survival is essential and she survived and made sure her family had opportunities to survive and thrive.
For me a heroine is not narcissistic, arrogant, demeaning or casually and frequently immoral and Dolly was all of these. I don’t regret reading this book but it wasn’t inspiring or a pleasure to read.

Alex Armstrong has changed everything about herself—her name, her appearance, her backstory. She’s no longer the terrified teenager a rapt audience saw on television, emerging in handcuffs from the quiet suburban home the night her family was massacred. That girl, Alexandra Quinlan, nicknamed Empty Eyes, was accused of the killings, fought to clear her name, and later took the stand during her highly publicized defamation lawsuit that captured the attention of the nation. It’s been ten years since, and Alex hasn’t stopped searching for answers about the night her family was killed.

Neither is able to understand or appreciate her sister’s perspective, each quick to be riled by the other. Both women have been indelibly shaped by the tragedy. Historia
Five years ago, ordinary Americans fell under the grip of a strange new malady that caused them to sleepwalk across the country to a destination only they knew. They were followed on their quest by the shepherds: friends and family who gave up everything to protect them. Their secret destination: Ouray, a small town in Colorado that would become one of the last outposts of civilization. Because the sleepwalking epidemic was only the first in a chain of events that led to the end of the world—and the birth of a new one.

Christian/Conservative Bashing
Revisado: 05-30-23
You’ll enjoy this novel if you believe Christians are stupid as well as evil, believe Conservatives are moronic and evil, and have a vitriolic hatred for President Trump. Almost forgot to mention that you’ll do a happy dance if you are a dedicated climate change devotee and Covid vaccine & lockdown cheerleader.
