Historia
Beginning with a brief overview of the various goals and phases of feminism from the early 19th century onward, writer and feminist theorist Jennifer Baumgardner takes you on a tour of a tumultuous decade full of complex issues and contradictions through the lens of the feminist movement and the ways it shaped - and was shaped by - the closing years of the 20th century. From abortion rights to ‘zines, Feminism in the 1990s explores the ways third-wave feminism reacted to popular culture while simultaneously being co-opted by it.

Nice little overview
Revisado: 01-20-25
This was a cute little lecture. Nothing devastatingly clever or unique, but it was a fine overview of the history of feminism.

Awful narrator, interesting content
Revisado: 01-02-25
The lecturer is a combination of childish, condescending, and disingenuous. What she is saying is both interesting and coherent, but the delivery is maybe the worst I’ve heard. Maybe this is an American thing, but the male narrators on the great courses don’t do this. Very odd and disturbing. Other than that it’s a fair short intro to personality testing.

Writing the Bible: Origins of the Old Testament

Who wrote Great Expectations? That’s easy: Charles Dickens. Who’s the author of Beloved? Toni Morrison, of course. Now how about the Old Testament? You’d think for a book as widely known, studied, and distributed as the Bible, the question of authorship would have been sorted out by now. But the question is more complex (and fascinating) than it seems. Why? Because asking it is to challenge everything we might assume about the Bible’s identity as a book, about what “writing” and “authorship” really mean, and about how a written text could become sacred.

religion out of the classroom. Ick! Shame on you great courses. It has a lot of interesting points, but slides off into some sort of sermon in the end. Which is also completely inconsistent with the actual academic contents.

Teenagers are a breed of their own. They speak their own language, they abide by their own rules, and they seem to exist to drive adults crazy. But adolescence is a typical stage of human development that is the essential preparation for success in the adult world. The more you understand about your teen’s brain, the better prepared you will be to handle this turbulent time. Professor Abigail Baird has devoted the majority of her career to studying adolescence, and in this Audible Original, she shares the latest perspectives on this amazing time of cognitive and behavioral growth.

Exceeded expectations
Revisado: 01-22-23
I learned so much I didn’t know about the teenage period. Not overly American, though she does seem to think everyone listening is from the US, and that we all have similar experiences of “dating” culture. Still very very informative and well done, with a fair dollop of humanism. I would’ve loved a longer version of this. Preferably one which would have tackled special need kids as well.

Historia
Between 1937 and 1945, approximately 55 million people perished in the series of interrelated conflicts known as the Second World War. No continent was left untouched, no ocean unaffected. The war led to the eclipse of Europe and the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as global superpowers; ushered in the atomic age; produced, in the Holocaust, the most horrific crime ever committed in the history of Western civilization, and led to the end of Europe's colonial empires around the world.

US second World war perspective
Revisado: 06-25-22
This series started out strong, and it had some very good points. The battle of Stalingrad was engagingly described. As soon as the US entered the war, that was pretty much the sole focus. I’m sorry to have to break it to all those happy Americans: y’all aren’t the center of the universe. It was a shame, because honestly that perspective isn’t all that interesting. Otherwise, it did have a lot of good information, a little attempt at actually covering more than just the European front etc.

Historia
The Middle East is a critically important area of our world. And, with its current prominence in international affairs, media images of the Middle East reach us on a daily basis. Much media coverage, however, is incomplete at best, failing to take account of either the complexities or the historical background of this pivotal region. For most of us, the real story of the Middle East remains untold. What made this crucial geopolitical area what it is today?

I’ll miss these lectures! I hope this professor writes some books I can disappear into (preferably in an audiobook format). I’ve learned a lot I didn’t know, not just about the early Middle East (I do wish there had been more about the time before Muhammad), but about the world in general.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Great book, fantastic narration
Revisado: 01-26-20
I had been putting off getting to this tomb of a book, only to find myself utterly absorbed by it after finally starting this audible book. I think I may have gotten in the members benefit program (which is now unfortunately no longer at all an actual benefit), but I would definitely recommend getting this version.
The narrator has such a scope and great feeling for this text, I feel like it gains a lot by her reading it. One small issue is the German pronunciation, of the few German quotes in the book. You could tell she tried, but I could still not at all understand it. It would have been nice with translations of the French (and German, for those who do not speak it?) quotes (oh, how educations have deteriorated!). Still. Five stars all the way

Historia

Great story, usual Stephen king ending
Revisado: 10-12-19
I haven’t indulged in any of Stephen kings novels since I was a teenager, and it was enjoyable to let myself get sucked into this story. The characters are interesting and nuanced in the first part, and in usual stephen king style (it, the stand) he goes completely crazy and ruins everything in the end. Too bad. Still worth a listen or a read. Maybe just stop half way through.

Step back to Christianity's first three centuries to see how it transitioned from the religion of Jesus to a religion about Jesus. How did a single group from among many win the struggle for dominance to establish the beliefs central to the faith, rewrite the history of Christianity's internal conflicts, and produce a canon of sacred texts – the New Testament – that supported its own views?

The advertising is erroneous
Revisado: 06-23-19
This is possibly the worst language course I have seen! They literally just repeat a bunch of completely random sentences slowly in danish. “I am bisexual”, “the advertising is erroneous”, “can I come home with you?” And so on. I kept waiting for “there’s an eel in my hovercraft”. Reading the danish dictionary may prove as effective a learning tool as this complete madness. I hope audible will let me get my money back!
