I feel that I have wasted a part of my life listening to this book. The hubris of 'quoting' yourself at the start of each chapter should have been warning enough. If that wasn't enough the incessant drone of 'subscribe to my mailing list blah blah blah' at the conclusion of every chapter.

However, the book was recommended by a friend and I listened to this title on his recommendation. I wish I could ask for my credit back.

John Lee and Jonathan Todd Ross do a good job of reading the book and there I cannot find fault.

The content of the book is utter nonsense. The supposed cycles that these two have identified are baseless.

This is a book whose time has come. Victor Hugo said: All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

In the current environment with political upheaval, it feels like the old system and structures are being irrevocably changed. In all this, we need leaders to guide us. Having said that I believe people have given up on leaders and often choosing the best from a bad bunch.

This book is truly an idea whose time has come. By being vulnerable and human; leaders can really inspire and motivate others for the tumultuous times that is only just starting.

If nothing else, this book has given me confidence in the processes I use to develop leaders. One part emotional intelligence mixed with two parts bravery plus some practical skills.

I have not read any of her previous books, but I dare you to read this one.

Any additional comments?

Dave Ulrich said the biggest challenge with education is not teaching kids math, but getting them to apply their math skills when they go to the grocery store.

Crush It! presents the same challenge. The content is excellent and laid out in Gary's typical style. The challenge for the listener is whether she will apply the strategies and skills.

Challenge your thinking about your employees

Would you consider the audio edition of The Alliance to be better than the print version?

This book challenges your thinking of your relationship with your employees. In a time where it is predicted that individuals will not only change job, but change career several times in the duration of their employment before retiring one day.

The concept presented by the authors is, in my opinion, unique and while I challenge the application thereof in a real world setting, it certainly proposes a new way of thinking about the relationship from the employer toward the employee.

In short the concept is that instead of having a permanent relationship with employees from the employers' perspective that the employer agrees and "alliance" with the employee for a certain project or 'mission'. Capture the flag then move on to another mission or move on to another company with a new mission.

As I mentioned, specifically in a African context, where employment laws are heavily regulated and the employee is protected in several ways there may need to be a total mindset shift to see all employment contracts essentially as temporary. However, the book still deserves 5 stars based on the concept. From experience, we find that employees often get bored and dulled by the day to day KPI's and other performance indicators. Using this alliance strategy to engage employees would work wonders in theory.

From my personal research for my Master's degree we found that the strongest antecedent to employee engagement is what we labelled psychological meaningfulness. This finding has been replicated by several researchers recently. The point is this: If an employee has a mission objective to achieve with autonomy and resources to achieve that goal that employee should surely be engaged and invest more discretionary effort.

Back to the book, I really enjoyed the performance by the authors in the audio programme. Alternating the reading of chapters between the authors makes the audio book more engaging and prevents the boring lull that sometimes comes from listening to one person just reading in the same tone throughout the whole book.

From a criticism perspective again as I have mentioned in previous reviews, the examples they use are all very American. For a global audience investing in this work the authors could in future editions explore examples from different countries and continents.

What did you like best about Emotional Intelligence? What did you like least?

The concept of EQ is nothing new. This book is supposed to have been the watershed moment for the birth of Emotional Intelligence worldwide. Having trained several people in EQ and the improvement thereof I made a promise to myself to read the source work in EQ. What a poor start... My personal opinion is that if this book really unlocked public attention to this concept there must not have been anything else.

Thank goodness the research in EQ and positive psychology has progressed to where it is today.

What did I not like about this book?
The repetitive morbid examples of what happens to people when they lack EQ or emotional and social competence. The book reads more like a narrative version of the DSM-IV with examples than a book on EQ.

What did I like about the book?
Some claims about EQ attributed to Daniel Goleman has been cleared up. Particularly the claim that 80% of our success comes from EQ.

Maybe this review is slightly harsh if you put the time into context, but thankfully we have progressed as a profession and a scientific field of study.
