More than just a crime story

The main characters are from an underrepresented and under appreciated group: retired adults. I love the observations, wisdom, and value they are portrayed with.

This is a who done it with one murder… then it gets a bit grisly at the very end. With all the developments of home technology, I found this gave me a lot to think about. Well written.

Quit after ten minutes
Revisado: 04-07-25
It just couldn’t hold my interest. The characters and story line didn’t intrigue and every book has to have the gay or black or trans best friend… feels inauthentic in this case.

Historia
In 1912, at the height of World War I, brilliant Shakespeare expert Elizebeth Smith went to work for an eccentric tycoon on his estate outside Chicago. The tycoon had close ties to the US government, and he soon asked Elizebeth to apply her language skills to an exciting new venture: code breaking. There she met the man who would become her husband, groundbreaking cryptologist William Friedman. Though she and Friedman are in many ways the Adam and Eve of the NSA, Elizebeth's story, incredibly, has never been told.

Although this is a biography, it reads with all the interest and intrigue almost of a novel. Far from being a collection of dry facts, the author makes one feel a great affinity for the two main characters.

A darkly funny short story about one woman’s reflections on the routes she’s taken through life and the detours she’s made along the way. Doubts and guilt swirl through her mind as she rides the train to her fertility appointment. Each stop stirs up introspective thoughts on her marriage, the loss of her baby, and the lover who got away—contemplations that push her ever closer to wondering if she’s made the right decisions.

Historia
It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was. She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

This was my first taking in if this story. I found myself gripped to get back to it at every break, so anxious was I to see how Lilys life would turn out. Amazing how an author can make one care about a character.
