Historia
Orphaned as a young child, Mirin O'Malley has been brought up by her grandparents on their isolated, rambling estate Hob's Hallow. Long ago her family prospered due to a deal struck with the mer, the terrifying creatures who live in the depths of the sea: safety for their merchant ships in return for a child of each generation. But for many years the family have been unable to keep their side of the bargain and their fortunes have suffered as a result. When Mirin's grandfather dies, her grandmother puts in train a plan to restore their glory - but at the price of Mirin's freedom.

Enchanting and lovely
Revisado: 12-28-22
The story was captivating, with its lovely descriptions and a very compelling storyline. The main character was endearing without being too overpowered overall. There are stories within the story that add an extra layer of intrigue, and help to build the setting.
The narration was also lovely, and the narrator did a very nice job of distinguishing voices without sounding silly.
My only complaint would be that some of the creatures are named without a great explanation of what they are (outside of general relations) and it’s hard to look up something based on the sound of its name.
Overall, I’m beyond satisfied with this book and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in myth-based fantasy and strong female leads.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Very impressed by the performance
Revisado: 11-09-22
The book is exactly what one would expect from one that has been so widely adored for centuries. Rosamund Pike, however, was absolutely wonderful in her narrative performance. Considering how many characters there were, she did an incredible job of giving each variation in a way that made it very easy to tell when someone was speaking and whom was doing the speaking, without resorting to silliness or accents. Furthermore, she was able to portray the emotions of the words in a way that was very satisfying.

Interesting and charming
Revisado: 10-21-22
The book was enjoyable to read, with a very interesting plot and good world-building. It was hard to get fully invested in any of the characters, however. Since the viewpoint switches between the two lead characters, neither one seems to really get fully expanded upon. The pace and focus of the story also seems to change quite dramatically part of the way through, and while it’s still interesting, it seemed a bit sudden. Overall the author did a nice job and the reader was pleasant and well-spoken. Some of the accents were a bit silly, but it didn’t detract much from the story.

Historia
Goldengrove’s towers and twisted chimneys rose at the very edge of the peaceful Weald, a stone’s throw from the poisonous marshes and merciless waters of Rye Bay. Young Tabby Palethorp had been running wild there, ever since her mother grew too ill to leave her room. I was the perfect choice to give Tabby a good English education: thoroughly respectable and far too plain to tempt her lonely father, Sir Kit, to indiscretion. I knew better than to trust my new employer with the truth about my past. But knowing better couldn’t stop me from yearning for impossible things.

Compelling but Repetitive
Revisado: 09-09-22
The story is compelling with complex characters and a plot that keeps you curious and entertained throughout. The writing was good, and narrated well, however the author repeats herself a number of times; certain phrases, ideas, and even complete sentences are frequently repeated. Overall enjoyable.

Historia
Finnmark, Norway, 1617. Twenty-year-old Maren Magnusdatter stands on the craggy coast, watching the sea break into a sudden and reckless storm. Forty fishermen, including her brother and father, are drowned and left broken on the rocks below. With the menfolk wiped out, the women of the tiny Arctic town of Vardø must fend for themselves. Three years later, a stranger arrives on their shore. Absalom Cornet comes from Scotland, where he burned witches in the northern isles. He brings with him his young Norwegian wife, Ursa.

Beautiful and Heartwrenching
Revisado: 08-11-22
A wonderful book, beautifully told. The accent could be a little difficult to understand at times, but rewinding a little generally made it clearer.
Not a happy story by any means, but not everything has to be.
