Historia
At the turn of the 22nd century, scientists make a breakthrough in human spaceflight. Through a revolutionary method known as somaforming, astronauts can survive in hostile environments off Earth using synthetic biological supplementations. With the fragility of the body no longer a limiting factor, human beings are at last able to journey to neighboring exoplanets long known to harbor life. A team of these explorers, Ariadne O’Neill and her three crewmates, are hard at work in a planetary system 15 light-years from Sol, on a mission to ecologically survey four habitable worlds.

Cozy and delightful
Revisado: 04-17-25
To Be Taught If Fortunate is a cozy sci-fi adventure that reminded me of Star Trek, if Captain Kirk was mild mannered, and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise was entirely comprised of scientists. Travel to other worlds and learn about their secrets alongside the crew of the Merian.
As always, Chambers created a realistic picture of unreal places. I love how logical and believable her landscapes and protocols are. It’s easy to lose yourself in this story with minimal suspension of disbelief.
The characters were also delightful. This story is intimate, following 4 people who will not see anyone else they know again, but it manages to do it without feeling sad or claustrophobic. Every voice was distinct and easy to enjoy.
I do wish the pacing had been a touch faster, but that is personal preference. While there is plot progression, there is very little tension in this book. Overall, a cozy read that asks you to think critically without being overly existential. A great read for anyone who enjoys character driven stories and sci-fi!

Historia
Anwuli Okwudili prefers to be called AO. To her, these initials have always stood for Artificial Organism. AO has never really felt...natural, and that's putting it lightly. Her parents spent most of the days before she was born praying for her peaceful passing because even in-utero she was "wrong". But she lived. Then came the car accident years later that disabled her even further. Yet instead of viewing her strange body the way the world views it, as freakish, unnatural, even the work of the devil, AO embraces all that she is.

A realistic future with realistic consequences
Revisado: 04-05-25
The plot, themes, and technology in this piece were well thought out and interesting. AO is a unique protagonist with a singular voice. I loved her internal struggle with her dependence on technology because it feels so relevant. I also love how Ultimate Corp feels sadly realistic.
Where this didn’t hold up for me was the style. I felt like this book told me too much without putting in the details that I was hoping for, which made it difficult to connect with emotionally.
That being said, I had no trouble suspending my disbelief. This manages to have realistic technology with realistic consequences. A great commentary on our times.

High school senior Andrew Perrault finds refuge in the twisted fairy tales that he writes for the only person who can ground him to reality—Thomas Rye, the boy with perpetually ink-stained hands and hair like autumn leaves. And with his twin sister, Dove, inexplicably keeping him at a cold distance upon their return to Wickwood Academy, Andrew finds himself leaning on his friend even more. But something strange is going on with Thomas. His abusive parents have mysteriously vanished, and he arrives at school with blood on his sleeve.

This book with carve your heart out.
Revisado: 02-22-25
I’m suing this book for emotional damage, but I loved it. Despite being heavy on the tropes and teen angst, this story was compelling and grips you to the bitter end. With flowery writing and violent darkness, there is something for every lover of dark academia and gothic fiction.
A dark fairytale like one you’ve never fallen into before. This book will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about the story. Follow along for a twisted story of love, obsession, and of course, monsters.
I liked the narrator and felt he did a good job differentiating the characters and dialogue. You could feel the emotion in his voice, which made the listening experience excellent.

Odd but I’m here for it.
Revisado: 02-08-25
This is an odd one, but if you’re looking to go for a ride, this book will take you on quite the journey.
I loved the writing style in addition to the plot. This was a rare time when I enjoyed both POVs equally, which is always a delight.
This book is a character study happening around a bit of a mystery, but there isn’t a great genre to identify this as.
Lean into the discomfort and enjoy.

Historia
The three Maxwell siblings keep their distance from the lily-white gated enclave outside Dallas where they grew up. When their family moved there, they were the only Black family in the neighborhood. The neighbors acted nice enough, but right away bad things, scary things—the strange and the unexplainable—began to happen in their house. Maybe it was some cosmic trial, a demonic rite of passage into the upper-middle class. Whatever it was, the Maxwells, steered by their formidable mother, stayed put, unwilling to abandon their home, terrors and trauma be damned.

Deep and dark
Revisado: 01-28-25
What makes a haunted house? Is it the ghosts or the memories of living there that haunt us? These are questions Ezra and their sisters struggle with in Model Home.
I loved the writing style of this book. It’s got unreliable narrators, flash backs, and poetic moments. It also pulled hard on my heart strings in almost every chapter.
Please be warned: there are a lot of tough themes and content expressed in this story, so please come into it as an informed reader if you need.

This book made me chuckle. I loved how mundane the characters were despite the plot being anything but. Clear plot progressions and character motivations made for a great experience.
If you’re a fan of My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix, then you should definitely check this out.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

A character piece.
Revisado: 01-12-25
This story is a deep dive into a strange person in a strange world. If you are a plot-centered person, then you may be less interested in this story. It feels inspired by stories I’ve read before, but is very much a piece all its own.

This book is a love letter to writing horror and to the LGBTQIA+ community. I liked how it combined real-world themes with goofy fictional situations. It shared its message without feeling preachy.

The Witch meets Carrie
Revisado: 12-14-24
If you liked The Witch and Carrie, then this book is for you. I loved how this story questions good and evil. In any other tale, most of these roles would be reversed.
While this story has a few moments of horror, this is pretty manageable for those who aren’t big on the genre. I will be recommending this one to many people, and hope you enjoy it too.

Revisado: 11-26-24
Every girl and her best friend can relate to this one. It was creative, funny, and had a great ending. If you’re looking for something short and sweet, this will scratch that itch. Not the most creative story ever, but it didn’t have to be because the quality was good.
The narrators and sound effects made it such an immersive experience. It was like listening to a radio show, which was awesome.
