Historia
Jack loved the Civil War. He scoured through his many books on the subject even more now that his sons had grown and he was alone. Needing to beat the boredom and depression he decided to take a camping trip, and through a twist of fate, Gettysburg became not only his destination but where his destiny lie as well.

Thrilling adventure! Outstanding narration!
Revisado: 03-16-24
Thrilling is the word to use for the new audiobook of Mark Pieper’s novel “I Survived Gettysburg.” The main character of the story, a Civil War buff like the author himself, leaves Ohio to visit Gettysburg and through a series of strange events, receives a souvenir of an actual confederate soldier’s uniform. After trying it on, and it fitting him perfectly, he's suddenly transported back in time and finds himself wearing this uniform while paired with other southern soldiers as Pickett’s charge begins. It’s exciting enough on the page (I read the book when it first came out), but David Allen Vargo, the award-winning narrator, adds arresting and effective sound effects along with creating many different voices for the various characters to make this adventure all too real. This audiobook is a must-listen for anyone who wants to experience what the largest battle of the Civil War must have been like for the men who fought and died at Gettysburg.

Historia
It is three in the morning when Bobby Western plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the site are the pilot’s bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.

Narrators Terrific, Story Lacking
Revisado: 01-19-23
This is the third Cormac McCarthy book I've read, and it's the last. There is no plot to speak of, and the story just rambles from one long conversation to another. The conversations are interesting enough but they have little to do with anything, and I demand that something happen in a book. The passenger of the title is presented as a major issue in the narrative at the very start, but then is dropped and never explored at all. I think if an author is going to name his book "The Passenger" it ought to have something to do with a passenger.
That said, the two narrators, MacLeod Andrews and Julia Whelan, are both splendid. In different segments they each have to present the voice of a stranger character called "The Kid," and both do him exactly the same way, which had to be hard to pull off. It is a pleasure to listen to narrators this good.

Historia
Reacher goes where he wants, when he wants. That morning he was heading west, walking under the merciless desert sun — until he comes upon a curious scene. A Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. A woman is slumped over the wheel. Dead? No, nothing is what it seems. The woman is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent trying to find her twin brother, who might be mixed up with some dangerous people. Most of them would rather die than betray their terrifying leader.

Going Downhill
Revisado: 11-21-21
These new Reacher books are very disappointing. Reacher himself is less interesting and other characters are poorly developed. The narrator has one speed: Ernest in the extreme. He uses the same voice for the characters, even women. In early scenes where Reacher is talking at length to a woman the listener can easily lose track of who is talking. Get an actor who has a range of voices.

Historia
An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

The diving sequences were very interesting and exciting.
Revisado: 06-22-21
I have read and enjoyed all of the Prey books. This one took a long while to get going, and that was a surprise. It was more than halfway through the book before it really engaged me. Lucas does little that is interesting, but Virgil and Ray steal the show, and the diving sequences are thrilling. Richard Ferrone is a fine narrator. He has a great voice and can act out the characters well. His excellent sense of humor is evident. His one flaw is that all the characters sound the same. When Lucas and Bob are talking the listener can lose track of which one is speaking if the text doesn’t mention that fact. Even if one of the characters is female Ferrone starts her lines with a higher voice but doesn’t always keep it up, so the same difficulty occurs.
