Historia
What happens when the President of the United States governs one Tweet at a time? When the elected leader of the free world may not have a firm grasp on the names of government agencies, much less an understanding of their intricate inner-workings? In the days following the 2016 inauguration, government personnel searched for answers that didn’t exist, while White House staff scoured halls for employees who would never be appointed.

A real eye opener!
Revisado: 04-22-25
A remarkable study of the steady flow of knowledge, genius, bravery and dedication emanating from the employees of a forgotten organization. The civil servants of the United States federal government.
Mr. Lewis expertly probes his subject, taking a microscope to the supposedly faceless bureaucracy to reveal it's not faceless at all, that we're just looking at it from too far away to make out the millions of individual faces there. Each one a humble, dedicated person who seeks neither game nor fortune but rather just wants to do their job.
You will be shocked to find out just how much the government does, and how little attention it gets in return.

Historia
Penny, an artist, has lived in the same apartment for decades, surrounded by the artifacts and keepsakes of her long life. She is resigned to the mundane rituals of old age, until things start to slip. Before her longtime partner passed away years earlier, provisions were made, unbeknownst to her, for a room in a unique long-term care residence, where Penny finds herself after one too many “incidents”.

I could not understand why this was written
Revisado: 03-13-25
I felt the narrator was overly dramatic , using a tone more suited for drama in passages which would have benefitted from a more lel, realistic tone

Historia
She spends her days alone at home, reading drugstore mysteries, polishing the doorknobs, waxing the floors. Her only companions are a vase of goldfish, a garden toad, and the door-to-door salesman who sells her cleaning supplies once a month. She broods over her deepest regrets: her blighted romances with self-important men, her lifelong struggle to feel at home in her own body, and her wayward early twenties, when she was a fish out of water among a group of eccentric, privileged young people at a liberal arts college.

Beautifully rendered characters, perfect narration
Revisado: 05-07-24
Delaine is first rate as a narrator. Her laid back, sassy tones are perfectly suited to the strange, sleazy yet mystical vision of the various characters we meet through our heroine's flat, almost sociopathic understanding.
This is a weird and thoroughly bewitching read.

Dismemberment/disability porn.
Revisado: 07-12-21
This book is so ridiculous even Aoife McMahon's stellar performance cannot save it. It is not a detective story so much as a Silence of the Lambs wannabe fetish tale about a doctor who blinds people and removes their bones, among other things. It wasn't until a full-fledged porn scene appeared out of the blue that I finally realized I was wasting my time on this.
The text is mainly dialog, with little pause for reflection. It reeks of a writer begging for somebody to commission a screenplay. Oddly, I think a talented team might make a decent movie or series out of this. Talent is needed as there is none to be found here.
It's dreadful, Stew.

I really dislike this format. An attempt to create a drama out of a novel makes poor drama and ruins the prose.

Historia
In Winter, life force matches up to the toughest of the seasons. In this second novel in her acclaimed Seasonal cycle, the follow-up to Ali Smith's sensational Autumn, Smith's shape-shifting quartet of novels casts a merry eye over a bleak post-truth era with a story rooted in history, memory, and warmth, its taproot deep in the evergreens: art, love, laughter. It's the season that teaches us survival.

Revisado: 01-01-21
I really like Melody Grove's narration. She gets everything just right. Pace, intonation, mood. Flawlessly picks out the characters' individuality in dialog sections and does men's voices really well despite her naturally high vocal pitch. Bravo!

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Soap opera
Revisado: 02-24-20
The whole story reads like a daytime soap. The characters are two dimensional, the depiction of the circumstances and setting are immature, and the narrator seems incapable of rendering conversation in anything but an aggressive or challenging tone.
Too much non-existent aggression, too little research. If you like mindless soaps you'll love it :-)

Historia
Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson ( Pulp Fiction) rocks this mock bedtime story, capturing a hilarious range of emotions as the voice of a father struggling to get his child to sleep. Go the F**k to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don’t always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland.

First class narration
Revisado: 10-26-19
Jim Norton is a born story teller. His deadpan delivery and witty character vocalizations perfectly capture the Irish setting and enhance the story no end. Easily the best I’ve heard.
The story itself is surreal yet captivating and witty. I think probably the best book I’ve heard on Audible.

Historia
As an old house is demolished in a gentrifying section of London, a workman discovers a tiny skeleton, buried for years. For journalist Kate Waters, it's a story that deserves attention. She cobbles together a piece for her newspaper, but at a loss for answers, she can only pose a question: Who is the Building Site Baby? As Kate investigates, she unearths connections to a crime that rocked the city decades earlier: A newborn baby was stolen from the maternity ward in a local hospital and was never found.

Sluggish and poorly read
Revisado: 03-08-18
I could not make it through this book. The story is slow to develop, obvious, and fails to pique the interest.
Aside from Rosalyn Landor, the readers are slow and monotonous. Attempts at accents are inept and irritating.
