Historia
A cozy mystery featuring a kleptomaniac cat. Beloved neighborhood cats are missing - the community can only guess at their fate - and Aunt Margaret's life is being threatened. Is it because she has a clue to the missing cats or is it something more sinister? Of course, as in all of the Klepto Cat Mysteries, Rags, an ordinary cat with a most unusual habit, has a paw in saving the day.

More romance than mystery
Revisado: 06-21-23
While it’s good to get the word out about cat rescue issues, I already knew all that. And from what I know, I will say the decision to not mention ALL the reasons cats might be stolen was a good one. Some are so awful it would be cruel to tell someone whose cat has been taken about them. Then the mystery seemed like such a small part of the whole story that I started to feel bored, & then that made me feel irritated. The cat-hoarding couple part was just dropped, the reason for the cat-napping seemed feeble, there was no followup on the truckful of horses that were taken away, no confirmation that the guy the tractor fell on was actually dead, and what was the point of bringing in a PI if the amateurs aren’t going to pass on their info to him & in fact he’s never mentioned again after the meeting where he’s introduced (oh, except once to say they’re not going to tell him anything)!

Historia
Victorian London is a cesspool of crime, and Scotland Yard has only 12 detectives - known as “The Murder Squad” - to investigate thousands of murders every month. Created after the Metropolitan Police’s spectacular failure to capture Jack the Ripper, The Murder Squad suffers rampant public contempt. They have failed their citizens. When Walter Day, the squad’s newest hire, is assigned the case of the murdered detective, he finds a strange ally in the Yard’s first forensic pathologist, Dr. Bernard Kingsley.

Glad I didn’t live in London in 1889!
Revisado: 05-10-23
So much darkness & violence. Makes me have a different perspective on our times now. For all the problems we have now, I wouldn’t want to be living in Victorian London instead! So much that I take for granted that wasn’t yet known—like just having a flashlight to see where you’re going! A LOT happens in this book! Much to keep track of, but not TOO much—just enough to keep it interesting. I thought the story was well-paced to make me want to keep listening. Excellent reader; kind of reminded me of the current reader of Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series—quiet, calm, gentle—but not sleepy. Interesting insight from other books I’ve read: I think Henry was autistic. Others have suggested there were some historic inaccuracies; my response is “Ok, so don’t take this as a history text, but as the fictional mystery it is.”

Historia
Who you want people to be makes you blind to who they really are. It’s been a year since Billie Flanagan — a Berkeley mom with an enviable life — went on a solo hike in Desolation Wilderness and vanished from the trail. Her body was never found, just a shattered cellphone and a solitary hiking boot. Her husband and teenage daughter have been coping with Billie’s death the best they can: Jonathan drinks as he works on a loving memoir about his marriage; Olive grows remote, from both her father and her friends at the all-girls school she attends.

Too much relationship stuff
Revisado: 04-12-23
I just wanted the suspense & investigation of what happened to her, not so much discussion of relationships. And the bit about Olive’s sexual orientation just seemed like a weird, irrelevant attempt to connect to current events. It’s fine if this is what you like to read about, it just wasn’t what I was wanting or expecting. If you want to spoil it for yourself, the epilog tells you what really happened to Billie.

Revelatory
Revisado: 04-06-23
It’s always interesting to me to learn how different autistic people experience the world. The brain is a fascinating thing. Now when I read historical stuff about people who were considered “off”, “weird”, “nonfunctional”, I think “they were probably autistic”.

Historia
Amelia - 1942: The inside of my closet held the last bit of my freedom before I was torn from my home and shoved onto a dark train. Our destination was even darker. "Women and children to the right. Men to the left," they shouted at us. Everything was taken from me, leaving only the smoke-filled air, piercing screams, and soul-burning cries. I was slowly starved and weakened to the bone, but there was a man - a Nazi - who brought me extra food. He called himself a prisoner too, but he scared me, and I wondered if he was the enemy I should fear the most.

I was captivated right from the beginning.
Revisado: 04-06-23
Historical fiction & romance. The chapters go back & forth between the present & WWII. I don’t think presenting the historical part as a diary entirely worked, because it felt more like you were witnessing it as it happened (especially dialog), & was rather detailed for supposedly having been written 2 yrs afterwards; but just ignore that & go with it. You won’t find this title as a separate book if you search on Goodreads; “Last Words” is presented as a trilogy, all 3 published the same date in 2022; reading the descriptions of those 3 has left me confused as to how they compare/relate to this one.

Historia
Nazi-occupied Prague, 1942: Amelia is hiding in her closet when flashlights blind her and she’s captured by the SS. Out on the cobblestone street, her heart shatters as her mother is shot before her eyes. She is shoved onto a freight train with hundreds of others—hours pass as they travel in darkness. Historia
You’ve probably never met someone like Clancy. He’s keeping a diary, he’s falling in love, there are rivals for his affections, he lives with his best friend and his worst enemy—even taken together, these factors are maybe not that unusual, except that Clancy is a dog. His point of view is therefore perhaps…different. Told in Cameron’s signature style, a tremendous cast of wonderful characters find themselves jointly and separately navigating the challenges of life, of love, and…other pets, including Clancy's “worst enemy”—one very disdainful cat.

…& I enjoyed it more the 2nd time. By then I’d gotten used to the annoying characters & found them funnier.
