Historia
A new version of The Epic of Gilgamesh by Sebastian Lockwood. This is the story of Gilgamesh, King of Kings, who brought back knowledge from before the flood - who loved and lost his companion Enkidu and had to find out why we die. The Epic of Gilgamesh was written on clay tablets over 4,000 years ago, in what is today Baghdad Iraq - the Biblical Garden of Eden between the Tigris and the Euphrates. Lockwood gives a passionate reading from a text that faithfully follows the original.

Beautiful retelling
Revisado: 02-14-24
Listening to Lockwood retell this story is such a pleasure — he captures what I imagine must have been the song-like vocal patterns of ancient storytellers in the oral traditions that preceded written literary texts. His work is a gift to listeners and to the tradition itself.

This is my favorite book in the series — there are parts that just made me laugh out loud. The debate in the village is a standout moment! Worth listening to again.

Love the character with ME/CFS!
Revisado: 12-17-23
What a delight to find a book in which one of the heroines suffers from ME/CFS, and uses her intelligence to help solve the mystery. As an American, I’m also delighted each time a character says: Call the Mounties!
A few lines throughout could have used better editing, but overall, this solid, female-driven mystery gets a thumbs up.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

One of my favorite books of all time.
Revisado: 10-03-23
I read this in 2008, after buying a copy on a trip to Charleston in early November. Every year since then, I’ve re-read it in the fall. Simon Prebble is the perfect reader, and makes the story even better. Clarke is a genius.

London. A newspaper editor is horrifically murdered, his death quickly followed by a series of more brutal and often bizarre slayings. What connects the killer to each bloody corpse? Scotland Yard detective Alan Winters leads a hunt for the elusive prey.

Great narrator, but UG such a sexist story
Revisado: 10-11-21
I was repeatedly annoyed by how sexist the writer is in his portrayal of all the character. Yuck. It’s a good story, but the fact that the chief detective can’t meet a woman without constantly thinking about her body and sleeping with her is gross. I wish this writer’s editors had challenged him to rewrite that relationship. It’s SO dated, and spoils a good story.
