The narrator is amazing, but the story isn’t great. It’s not bad enough to not listen to, but it can be very entertaining to listen to. I recommend listening to it on a long car ride, or maybe in the morning while you’re still in bed. 3.8 stars.

Historia
Nobody needs telling there isn’t enough time. We’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and the ceaseless battle against distraction; and we’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient, and “life hacks” to optimize our days. But such techniques often end up making things worse. The sense of anxious hurry grows more intense, and still the most meaningful parts of life seem to lie just beyond the horizon.

Finally at peace with time!
Revisado: 02-07-23
I don’t know that this is the type of book to be adored, but that doesn’t change the fact that I genuinely adored it. Nor is it the kind of book I would expect people to describe as healing. Yet, I absolutely experienced it as such.
Let’s begin with its perfectly apt title. You can’t possibly begin to understand why it’s so fitting until you read it. Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals. I had assumed it was meant in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way. But not all. The fact that we are mere mortals, with a limited time on the planet, is absolutely central to the topic of the book. In addition to the finitude (of roughly 4,000 weeks) of our lives, there’s the element of our humanity, meaning the ways we are wired as human beings.
I listened to the audio version and it’s absurd how many passages I took ‘clips’ of. It’s not that the ideas were new to me. On the contrary, Burkeman expressed the very same and complete range of ideas that I’ve been grappling with obsessively for decades. My fixation often left me wondering if I might simply be neurotic. The experience of listening to someone ELSE speak to my concerns convinced me otherwise and gave me great comfort.
His thorough analysis of the way we relate to time and his commentary on the additional pressures we face in this era of technology removed my previously-held belief that my frustration with time constraints might be a personal issue (e.g., a character flaw or some kind of persistent failing on my part.) It put to rest the notion that the realities imposed by time are something to be questioned and resolved. Instead, human conflict with the limitations of time is just part of life. It’s how it is, just another aspect of the human experience. Also, time isn’t something we “have." In his words, “We are time.”
Perhaps the best part, for me personally, is that I myself always planned to write a book on the topic of time, and now I don’t have to. I thought that to unravel the conundrum and come to peace with time once and for all, nothing short of sitting down and writing would do the trick. Thanks to Burkeman, the job has already been completed. My quest to understand my issues with time feels fulfilled, and I also feel vicariously and fully “self"-expressed. He has literally saved me years of heartache and TIME. So thank you, Oliver, for this incredibly valuable piece of work! I will be recommending it widely.
