Historia
Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members - mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists - The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age.

Well organized, clarifying, excruciating.

This book was exactly what I needed it to be. As an American Jewish person in my 60s I realize that I was kept very ignorant of the actual history of the last hundred years in Palestine and given what has occurred since 2023 I felt it was my responsibility to educate myself. This book absolutely serve that purpose. It is well written, straightforward, and organized in a way that brings everything into focus.

Historia
On the streets of 1970s Brooklyn, a daily ritual goes down: the dance. Money is exchanged, belongings surrendered, power asserted. The promise of violence lies everywhere, a currency itself. For these children, Black, brown, and white, the street is a stage in shadow. And in the wings hide the other players: parents; cops; renovators; landlords; those who write the headlines, the histories, and laws; those who award this neighborhood its name. The rules appear obvious at first. But in memory’s prism, criminals and victims may seem to trade places.

Historia
In Ejaculate Responsibly, Gabrielle Blair offers a provocative reframing of the abortion issue in post-Roe America. In a series of 28 brief arguments, she deftly makes the case for moving the abortion debate away from controlling and legislating women’s bodies and instead directs the focus on men’s lack of accountability in preventing unwanted pregnancies. The result is a compelling and convincing case for placing the responsibility—and burden—of preventing unwanted pregnancies away from women and onto men.

Very Important Food for Thought
Revisado: 06-26-23
While at times Ms. Blair runs hyperbolic and definitely didn't get all the physiology stuff just right, the main ideas here are simple and yet absolutely mind-boggling. This is absolutely worth listening to. I am a women's healthcare provider (midwife) and I will recommend this to my colleagues.

Historia
In this epic history of extermination and survival, Timothy Snyder presents a new explanation of the great atrocity of the twentieth century, and reveals the risks that we face in the twenty-first. Based on untapped sources from eastern Europe and forgotten testimonies from Jewish survivors, Black Earth recounts the mass murder of the Jews as an event that is still close to us, more comprehensible than we would like to think and thus all the more terrifying.

I bought this book several years ago with the intention to listen to it but just couldn’t make myself do it. When Putin invaded Ukraine I thought now is the time. This is a very important book for understanding the connection between the past and the present - and the potential future. I cannot overstate how important it is that people understand what this book explains so clearly. I highly recommend it even though I warn you it is a difficult read.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Awful Narrator
Revisado: 02-13-21
I watched the Netflix series and loved it so much I thought I'd give the book a listen to see how faithful the show was to the book - to see if, as often is the case, the book was stronger. It may have been but with this reader, who would know? She sounds like a talentless musician using autotune. When she changes her voice to be characters other than the protagonist, they all sound the same and none of them sound like people... her voice literally becomes robotic and forced. She has a strange inflection that is so distracting it's almost impossible to enjoy the story. I cannot imagine how she was given the job of reading books. What a miserable, disappointing pairing.

Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

Would have seemed like a fairytale until the Trump era
Revisado: 12-20-20
This is a story that blends fiction with autobiography masterfully. The writing is brilliant and Roth tells a story about how easy it would be for fascism to rise in the United States because of the influence of foreign powers. It is a cautionary tale that has come true. There are remarkable similarities between the current President of the United States and President Lindbergh. A very timely work.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

Historia
"We were eight years in power" was the lament of Reconstruction-era Black politicians as the American experiment in multiracial democracy ended with the return of white supremacist rule in the South. Now Ta-Nehisi Coates explores the tragic echoes of that history in our own time: the unprecedented election of a Black president followed by a vicious backlash that fueled the election of the man Coates argues is America's "first White president".
