Historia
On February 20, 1945, the second day of the assault on Iwo Jima - one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific theater in World War II - Private Jack Lucas, who was only 17, and three other Marines engaged in a close-proximity firefight with Japanese soldiers. When two enemy grenades landed in their trench, Lucas jumped on one and pulled the other under his body to save the lives of his comrades. Lucas was blown into the air as his body was torn apart by 250 entrance wounds. He was so severely wounded that his team left him for dead. Miraculously, he survived.

Not Really About Iwo Jima
Revisado: 02-25-21
Jack Lucas was undoubtedly a hero on Iwo; the Medal of Honor is very difficult to earn. However, I didn't find his story compelling. There is great deal of self aggrandizing of his many exploits, quite at odds with the quiet modesty that most heroes of our country's armed conflicts exhibit.
Many of these memoirs are worth sharing with younger generations so they understand and appreciate the price our veterans have paid to preserve our country. (By the way, I am an Army veteran.) This is not one of them. Mr. Lucas revels in his lack of respect for military authority and other unsavory behavior, a bad boy who has gotten a pass because of a single act, albeit a remarkable one.
Beyond Mr. Lucas' pugnacious character, the first part of the book lurches awkwardly back and forth in time. Additionally, there is very little about his time on Iwo Jima, but lots about how quick he was to fight, even into old age.
The ones thing I found very interesting was how well he described the Japanese fortifications on Iwo. I have read multiple history's of this epic battle, but learned several interesting facts from Mr. Lucas.
The narrator was excellent, the ones saving grace for this title. He has a wonderful southern accent, and does a wonderful job given the clunky writing of the book.

May Worst Audible Experience
Revisado: 02-18-21
This is the worst Audible book I have ever read.
The story snows little imagination and evidently n I research. There are mistakes too numerous chronicle.
With regard to narrations, the worst I could have previously said was that the narration was neutral to the story. This was so bad that it was a distraction. There were multiple mispronunciations, and the characters became charactures.

one of Grisham's best
Revisado: 12-17-20
I've read everything that Mr Grisham has ever written. wow his books are always enjoyable, I find sometimes they can become formulaic. A time for Mercy is definitely not that. I think that A Time to Kill is probably his best book ever, and this is a great follow-up to it. IT addresses a tough subject in a great way. if you like Jake Brigance in the previous novels, you'll love him here.
I've listened to a lot of audiobooks, and I don't know that I've ever heard a narrator have the kind of range that mr. Beck has. He had distinct voices for every single one of his characters, and every one of them got the rural Mississippi dialect down perfectly. Without giving anything away, he also does a really great job with a Scottish brogue.
This Book is well worth the investment of time.

Almost everything about Wallace is at odds with the Midwestern university town where he is working uneasily toward a biochem degree. An introverted young man from Alabama, black and queer, he has left behind his family without escaping the long shadows of his childhood. For reasons of self-preservation, Wallace has enforced a wary distance even within his own circle of friends—some dating each other, some dating women, some feigning straightness.

A Tediously Book About Nothing
Revisado: 12-01-20
The only reddening element was some of the imagery was good.
The main character is a milquetoast man who can't quite figure out who the is or what he wants. it's not some existential quest, just a man drifting along like flotsam.

Quirky bit fum
Revisado: 11-17-20
one Garner Bubba Britton awhile that has lived up to my expectations. As many of the reviews say, it's quirky, but so cleverly written that I frequently found myself laughing out loud at the width of author.
I will also say that this is the best performance by an aerator that I've ever heard. While I know that the narrator is not from the south, she doesn't medical job with a Southern accent without making it sound syrupy and over-the-top.

Muddled Political Diatribe
Revisado: 10-02-20
This story had potential, but Mr. Wilson's political views ruined it. The story is too long, disjointed and devolves into political editorializing. If I wanted left wing editorializing, I'd subscribe to The New York Times. The ending also moves the book from fiction to a fairy tale, albeit something from The Brothers Grimm.
Mr. Porter's performance is amazing. His ability to affect multiple accents is impressive, and he brings real life to a narrative that would otherwise be DOA.

Not a novel, it's a Grimms fairy tail
Revisado: 08-03-20
This started off well, but devolved into a vacuous miasma. There is unnecessary political commentary and a ridiculously predictable ending.
this is a mindless beach read. I'm surprised it is a NYT best seller.

Well done historical narrative
Revisado: 06-05-20
most of the histories of World War II in Europe that I have read said little or nothing about the experience of American pows at the hands of the Germans. This is well done historical biography by a gentleman who is not a historian by training. It's a great story about his father and an incredible acts of Bravery that saved the lives of over a thousand men. Well worth the investment of time.

In 2012, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device left Dan Crenshaw's right eye destroyed and his left blinded. Only through the careful hand of his surgeons, and what doctors called a miracle, did Crenshaw's left eye recover partial vision. And yet, he persevered, completing two more deployments. Why? There are certain stories we tell ourselves about the hardships we face—we can become paralyzed by adversity or we can adapt and overcome. We can be fragile or we can find our fortitude. Crenshaw delivers a set of lessons to help you do just that.
