A skillful telling of a classic tale
Revisado: 05-01-24
Most people have heard of Cervantes character, Don Quixote.
There are many abbreviated versions of the story (even a cartoon version “starring “ Mr Magog.)
Still, until now I have never encountered the story , as written by Cervantes, until I listened to this audio book.
The narrator is very skilled- giving unique voices to each character, and doing it so well, that I soon began to recognize the voices of the main characters before the attribution for the sayings was announced.
The book is long and episodic- obviously intended to be read at a leisurely pace over a long stretch of days. Many of the episodes can stand alone, without reference to the events which precede them. Most are comical, employing broad, even slapstick humor.
However, running underneath the merriment you can find interesting insights and commentaries on Cervantes’ times (early 1600s)
Unlike “The Man of La Mancha” - the Broadway musical inspired by Don Quixote, the book makes fun of tales of Chivalry, rather than glamourizing them. Apparently, some people in Cervantes’ day didn’t realize that the popular novels written about “the days of Knights of old” were fiction. Cervantes wanted to show how impossible

Historia
Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

A wonderful narrative interpretation of a timeless tale
Revisado: 04-01-24
Richard Armitage’s performance in reading this story is amazing.
He gives unique and evocative voices to each of the characters. He brings Charles Dickens’ words to life in a compelling way.
For those who have never read this book, story and writing are rich with detail and intelligent, and often humorous observation. The flow of the language can take a bit of getting used to, if you are not acquainted with the Victorian style of writing, but is well worth the effort, and Armitage’s narration helps a lot with this task.
This story was originally serialized in newspapers, so it does have some of the rambling quality of a soap opera (though an uncommonly good soap opera.) The best way to approach this story is to consider it a guided journey, full of sites and wonders, and give yourself over to the expert guidance of Dickens’ mastery of words and imagination, and Armitage’s wonderful narrative interpretation.

Vividly drawn historical fiction
Revisado: 05-02-22
I know little about the actual historical events that inspired this novel, and can’t comment on the accuracy of the descriptions. I can say though, that the vivid prose carried me away to another world that felt very real.
The actress who narrates this novel captures the lilt of the prose and the thoughtful nuances of characters and story very well.
I highly recommend this audiobook .

Historia
Sarah Gilchrist has fled London and a troubled past to join the University of Edinburgh's medical school in 1892, the first year it admits women. She is determined to become a doctor despite the misgivings of her family and society, but Sarah quickly finds plenty of barriers at school itself: professors who refuse to teach their new pupils, male students determined to force out their female counterparts, and - perhaps worst of all - her female peers who will do anything to avoid being associated with a fallen woman.

Fascinating Look At a Pivotal Time
Revisado: 04-30-22
This novel simmers with a gritty realism without ever dipping into exploitive or lurid descriptions.
The author makes you feel as though you are experiencing the events. No cliques here!
The masterful, expressive narration enhances the already evocative prose, pulling the listener into the story.
I had difficulty tearing myself away from this audiobook.
Excellent!

“This isn't strictly speaking an instructional manual, but a work of comedic philosophy.” Elvis Costello - songwriter, singer, author, and Fender Jazzmaster known to his admirers as “The Little Hands of Concrete” - spins his tale with wit, grit, and spit to spare. How to Play the Guitar and Y, Costello’s new entry into Audible’s Words + Music series, combines recitation, impersonation, and musical illustration to show you how to turn a three-chord trick into a four-chord caper and let your curiosity take you where it will.

Wonderful, comedic ramblings through musical history
Revisado: 11-26-21
I have listened to some other audios in this words and music series. The others were touching, personal, often intimate confessions of the musicians. They highlighted the personality and wisdom of the artist, and I am grateful for them.
This offering by Elvis Costello is very different. You learn little about Costello himself by listening to this production.
However, as the program title promises, you can learn a good deal about music from this audio. Spooned into your ears with generous helpings of humor and whimsy.
It also doesn’t hurt that Elvis Costello delivers this in a beautiful, resonant, speaking voice, with great pizzazz!
I couldn’t help hoping that Costello will do more narrations. He is so thoroughly entertaining in this audio!

Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Funny, witty, romance
Revisado: 10-21-21
Phillipa Soo displays wonderful comedic timing in narrating this delightful, insightful romance by Lily Chu.
The protagonist is wonderfully sympathetic and irreverent, and author, Lily Chu grounds the story with witty descriptions of everyday events that make the improbable plot seem totally plausible and believable.
In a way, it seems like a modern version of Jane Austen’s best work - filled with quirky characters and wry observations.
I heartily recommend this audiobook!

Beautifully Performed Psychological Drama
Revisado: 08-21-20
This production is a series of monologues that show the evolution and development of three different characters and how their stories and attitudes and wounds effect each other.
That may sound heavy and dry, but I assure you that it is the opposite of dry! Also, the frequent and artful use of humor keeps the heavy parts from becoming oppressive.
Most of all, the actors who perform these pieces are brilliant and amazing in the way that they are able to convincingly portray all the nuances of emotion and unfolding insights that the characters experience through out the play.
Highly recommend this recording!

More than a romance
Revisado: 08-19-20
Yes, romance is definitely part of this story, but only a part of it.
This is a fully rounded story of characters overcoming anger, guilt and fear and gradually finding courage, forgiveness, healing and redemption .
A wonderful, warm, uplifting story.
As an added bonus, each chapter starts with quotes from historical sources (probably from the author’s research) that open a window onto English country life from this bygone era. A treat for history buffs!

Multi-generational exploration of effects of racism
Revisado: 07-09-20
If you are looking for a story that unfolds in a clear chronological order with a traditional beginning, obstacle, confrontation of the obstacle, vanquishing of the obstacle and denouement, this book will disappoint you.
However, if you seek an immersion in a different culture, and a vivid, multi-faceted, exploration of the effects of racism, classism and sexism - stretching back to the days of slavery, you will likely find this book satisfying.
The author weaves together multiple story lines of different characters, while bouncing freely backward and forward in time. The characters are bound together by blood (though the characters themselves are often unaware of how they are related). . . And yes, there are ghosts, deliciously chilling ghosts, of both the literal and figurative kinds, haunting the chapters.
Listeners unused to Jamaican accents will have to listen very carefully as the narrator’s authentic Jamaican accent re-creates dialogues between Jamaicans in dialectical Jamaican English - but this is part of what makes the story telling of this audiobook so vivid. Using a standard American dialect for the Jamaican parts of these stories would water down their effect.
This book is both an entertaining literary offering and an intelligent exploration of some of our societal ills - made more personal by focusing on the generational connections within one family.
The book also provides a tantalizing peek into Jamaican culture and its intersection with American and British culture.
An interesting listen!

A revealing, surprising and humorous look at decision making
Revisado: 05-05-20
I love reading about psychology - ideas about what makes us"tick". Therefore I expected to enjoy this book, and I also expected that I would be familiar with much of the research.
I did enjoy this book, but I also was surprised by many of the experiments and their conclusions.
The surprise comes partly from the different perspective of the author - he is trained as a behavioral economist, not a psychologist or sociologist.
However, the surprise also comes from the author's playful and mischievous approach to his research.
Though he tackles serious questions to attain serious answers, his methods (and his narrative) display a high degree of creativity and humor.
I suspect that he is popular with his students.
You should not take from this statement that this book is frivolous. While the narrative is amusing, the insights the author shares have profound implications.
As I listened, I found myself wishing that this book was required reading in high school, and that many public policy makers understand these principles. (Though, on second thought, there are probably many policy makers in different areas of society who use these principles to the detriment of the general public- or would do so if they understood these principles!)
In any case, I do recommend this book - both for its insights and its entertainment value.
