Historia
It's one of the most revered movies of Hollywood's golden era. Starring screen legend Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly in her first significant film role, High Noon was shot on a lean budget over just 32 days but achieved instant box-office and critical success. It won four Academy Awards in 1953, including a best actor win for Cooper. And it became a cultural touchstone, often cited by politicians as a favourite film, celebrating moral fortitude.

Fascinating from beginning to end
Revisado: 04-24-25
Sometimes books try to yoke two stories together and the whole fails to be greater than the parts … High Noon on the other hand does it brilliantly… fascinating take on the making of the movie High Noon that is then coupled with the Hollywood blacklist being instituted by the “Red hunters”… the startling parallels to our current times simply makes it all the more powerful and important… Truly a first rate book (and listen )

Fascinating Story
Revisado: 04-15-25
A fascinating and convincing account that is meticulously documented. At times, the author tries a bit too hard to make it sound like he’s solving the DaVinci Code himself, but that was a slight annoyance compared to the overall quality of the book.

Historia
In Egypt, all things are possible. So discovers Albion Stanley, a recent Cambridge graduate and brilliant linguist, newly arrived in Cairo in 1902. Albion sees the unseen, including ghosts. It is a less than comfortable reality, which he tends to with copious amounts of whiskey and numerous other vices. Also in Cairo is Aleister Crowley, the famed occultist. Aleister is a dangerous man, but not an unsympathetic one and never a dull one. Together, they discover the world of dead Egyptians, some of whom are older than the pyramids.

Wonderful book, wonderful narration
Revisado: 02-23-25
I listened to this on Audible and must say the narrator was born for this book -- his tone and reading fit the text perfectly. The writing is simply gorgeous -- brilliantly brings to life Egypt at the start of the twentieth century. And the author's imagination is breathtaking -- she has imagined a magical world that is so fully developed and populated by a variety of spirits and ghosts that it truly feels real. She got me to suspend my disbelief and I normally am pretty difficult on that score. The book is a story of both intrigue and romance/relationships that surprises at every bend. An easy 5 stars on both story and narration.

Historia
France's iconic queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous "Let them eat cake", was alternately revered and reviled during her lifetime. For centuries since, she has been the object of debate, speculation, and the fascination so often accorded illustrious figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted child was thrust onto the royal stage and commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in European history.

Fascinating take that changed my preconceptions
Revisado: 02-08-25
A bit slow going for the first quarter, but it is necessary to set up what is a fascinating tale for the last three quarters … I was really astounded to find myself sympathetic to Marie Antoinette, which is the definite goal of the author… But I feel the author does it in a fair minded way and has the biographer’s eye for fascinating facts to keep you reading to the next page with anticipation …very very well done with astonishing parallels to today’s world and the dangers that come with riling up popular opinion with falsehoods and stories that play to our darkest emotions (I am the one drawing those parallels, not the author) … I listen to the audiobook version, and thought the narration extremely well done

But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don't want to know what the "A" stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.

Historia
Author and historian Tom Holland returns to his roots in Roman history and the audience he cultivated with Rubicon—his masterful, witty, brilliantly researched popular history of the fall of the Roman republic—with Dynasty, a luridly fascinating history of the reign of the first five Roman emperors. Dynasty continues Rubicon's story, opening where that book ended: with the murder of Julius Caesar. This is the period of the first and perhaps greatest Roman emperors. It's a colorful story of rule and ruination, from the rise of Augustus to the death of Nero.
