Sing-song Narration Spoiled It For Me
Revisado: 01-13-25
I believe the author wrote a wondetful story about the potato famine according to the reviews. But I can not listen to 15 hours with the narrator's choppy sing-song rhythm. It doesn't bring the story to life in a serious tone. I tried to complete the first chapter but couldn't suffer another minute.
I applaud those who made it through the whole audio performance.

A Tribute to the Wampanoag Nation
Revisado: 03-12-24
I applaud Cynthia Riggs for her brilliant storytelling of beautiful Martha's Vineyard and it's diverse people. She has given a strong voice and a distinct dignity to this diversity.
What an incredible mystery! This is the best one of the 6 I have listened to so far. You know the author has succeeded when you, the reader, settle into the human experience and become attached to the characters. You can visualize the places, people and scenery. You become so famuar with the town that you are comfortable driving down New Lane. I even Googled a map of Martha's Vineyard to see where's the names of places were.
Victoria is that person you would want as a friend. She is kind, compassionate, understanding, principled and fair-minded. She is also wise.
I enjoyed this book immensely and Davina Porter is a superb narrator. She brought the story to life with each voice, each mood and each personality.

Delightful mystery
Revisado: 01-27-24
This is sych a delightful mystery with an interesting variety of characters. There were moments that I was laughing at their responses and reactions to one another. The author nailed human nature whic she portrayed it culturally on this island.
Thank you, Cynthia Riggs for honoring our senior citizens in a dignified and charming way. I learned a lot about the environment there, especially the Cranefly orchid.
Needless to say Davina Porter did a splendid narration. She's one of the best!!

Historia
Jamestown, England's first real foothold in the New World, was fraught with danger - from starvation and disease to violent skirmishes between colonists and the native populations. Mortality rates were impossibly high: six out of seven settlers died within the first few years. How clear these and other perils were made to the 56 young women who left their homes and boarded ships in England in 1621, nearly 15 years after Jamestown's founding, is not known. But we do know who they were. Their ages ranged from 16 to 28, and they were deemed "young and uncorrupt".

Reading is Too Disjointed
Revisado: 11-18-23
Sadly, this is probably an interesting historical account but the narrator is choppy, hesitating to the point of disconnecting or interrupting the complete thought. It was hard to follow all the historical details!! I am unable to finish Chapter 1.
