Disappointing
Revisado: 09-22-18
I felt this book was light on actionable insights, and that it lacked focus or direction.
Though I found the narration pleasant enough, the production value seemed low, with a lot of harsh, popping ‘p’ sounds, and more mispronunciations than I’m used to from Audible - including an ironic instance where the first name of ‘Jean Piaget’ is pronounced as in ‘blue jeans’, in a sentence including a quip about how this really is the way to pronounce ‘Piaget’.
There are better books if you want to learn about thinking more clearly - such as ‘The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking’ (by Burger & Starbird), or the Great Courses course called ‘Tools of Thinking: Understanding the World Through Experience and Reason’.

In this clear introduction to ethics, Simon Blackburn tackles the major moral questions surrounding birth, death, happiness, desire, and freedom, showing us how we should think about the meaning of life, and how we should mistrust the soundbite-sized absolutes that often dominate moral debates.

Only Okay
Revisado: 04-19-18
Not sure if it was that had erroneous expectations or that this was really just mediocre. It seemed kind of like one guy’s opinion in a lot of places; I guess I was just hoping for a whirlwind tour of the ‘classic’ philosophical thought on ethics, and that really wasn’t what this was.
It was thought provoking in places and not without its merits, but I found it only ‘Okay’.

We live in a world of great and increasing complexity, where even the most expert professionals struggle to master the tasks they face. Longer training, ever more advanced technologies - neither seems to prevent grievous errors. But in a hopeful turn, acclaimed surgeon and writer Atul Gawande finds a remedy in the humblest and simplest of techniques: the checklist.

Should be required reading for all professionals who deal with complexity
Revisado: 04-15-18
Just finished my third listen of this book, and still found a few gems of wisdom that I had missed before.
I routinely see opportunities to apply these lessons in my professional life, and hope that all professionals will - in time - come to hold themselves and their professions to the level of excellence that this book promises is achievable... with only a little more humility and discipline, but no real need for increased technical skill.
The only minor criticism I had was of the production, rather than the book. There were several places in the book where a line or two had been obviously recorded at a different time and spliced in afterwards, and it had a different sound quality and tone to the speaker’s voice.
Over-all, I highly recommend this book!

The lectures address-in chronological sequence-a series of major works that have shaped the ongoing development of Western thought both in their own right and in cultural dialogue with other traditions. In the process, the course engages many of the most perennial and far-reaching questions that we face in our daily lives.

Definitely worth the listen, but...
Revisado: 01-07-18
I really enjoyed these lectures and plan to continue on with the series.
My only complaint was with the quality of the delivery: there were a number of places where the same phrase was repeated (I assume an editing error), and the lecturers sometimes seemed to be deliberately reading their lines to the point of it being a bit halting - I imagine the long pauses between words being the result of having to find their place in the script, rather than just telling us the story.
Still - a very interesting introduction that has piqued my interest to keep learning more.
