Lovely to follow the antics again of the Murder Club crew. Well crafted storyline with just enough surprises and a satisfying ending.

Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Interesting insights into writing world
Revisado: 01-10-24
Enjoyed learning about the publishing world, but otherwise an unlikable, unsympathetic lead that came off as repeatedly whiny. Kept listening because our book club selection, but may have jumped off half way otherwise.

Historia
Sylvie Pelletier recounts leaving her family’s snowbound mountain cabin to work in a manor house for the Padgetts, owners of the marble-mining company that employs her father and dominates the town. Sharp-eyed Sylvie is awed by the luxury around her; fascinated by her employer, the charming “Countess” Inge, and confused by the erratic affections of Jasper, the bookish heir to the family fortune. Her fairy-tale ideas of romance take a dark turn when she realizes the Padgetts’ lofty philosophical talk is at odds with the unfair labor practices that have enriched them.

Realistic telling of very tough and unfair times
Revisado: 07-12-23
After a recent visit to Marble and Redstone CO, was interested to have the early years brought to life so well. Though a fictional story, the details of life in the cold, combined with the unfair business practices was well presented. The struggles presented were certainly felt by the workers. The presenter did a good job on the different characters, though 1-2 were poorly done.

Enjoyable story, but a bit contrived
Revisado: 06-21-23
Great storytelling and interesting characters. Seems like we left Sally hanging, but other characters had satisfying conclusions considering the short calendar-time of the novel. For a good story, the actions need to be believable. Had to suspend that notion from time to time. Still, kept me interested and wanting to listen more.

Historia
Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for fame. The one thing he doesn’t have is talent - but he’s not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don’t need to be his own. Working as a waiter in a West Berlin hotel in 1988, Maurice engineers the perfect opportunity: a chance encounter with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann. He quickly ingratiates himself with the powerful - but desperately lonely - older man, teasing out of Erich a terrible, long-held secret about his activities during the war.

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Heartwarming survival story of the bombing of London
Revisado: 03-27-22
Worthy effort with believable descriptions of what it was like to live be in London during Hitlers consistent bombing of London. A few loose ends of the story- what did they do with the rescued German books?- but enjoyable read.

Historia
Chicago, 2018: Ole Henryks, a popular restauranteur, is set to be honored by the Danish/American Association for his many civic and charitable contributions. Frequently appearing on local TV, he is well known for his actions in Nazi-occupied Denmark during World War II - most consider him a hero. Britta Stein, however, does not. The 90-year-old Chicago woman levels public accusations against Henryks by spray-painting “Coward”, “Traitor”, “Collaborator”, and “War Criminal” on the walls of his restaurant.

Incredible story of incredible bravery
Revisado: 09-14-21
I love historical fiction because of the hope of learning about an important historical time combined with a riveting story. I knew virtually nothing about the Danish role during WWII, and this powerful story gave me great insight into their unique and rather unified and brave response to the Nazi occupation. Add to that a well told story with interesting and deep characters, and I found the perfect combination. Hope you learn and enjoy it as much as me.
