Historia
Hey you guys, it’s Leslie. I’m excited to share my story with you. Now, I’m gonna be honest: Some of the details might be vague because a b*tch is fifty-five and she’s smoked a ton of weed. But while bits might be a touch hazy, I can promise you the underlying truth is REAL.

Not your typical audio book
Revisado: 12-04-24
I’ve never heard an audio book like this one before! Leslie doesn’t read her book aloud; she uses it as a memory prompt to tell us her stories. The experience is that of listening to a close (and hilarious!) friend passionately and uninhibitedly telling us about her life. There is much hearty laughter and not a few tears.
If swear words offend you, you’ll want to skip this one, because Leslie drops an F bomb approximately every 2.6 words (give or take). However, if you’re a fan of Leslie’s and/or SNL, or a fan of stand up copy, or interested in the inner workings of show biz, or seeking life inspiration, or simply like to learn about the lives of others, this book is for you!

Historia
To fully understand these strange and dangerous times, Jared Yates Sexton takes a hard look at our nation’s history: namely, the abuses committed by those in power and the comforting stories that shaped the way the West has viewed itself up to the present. As reactionaries and authoritarians cling to myths about “Western civilization,” The Midnight Kingdom exposes how political power, religious indoctrination, and economic dominance have been repeatedly weaponized to oppress and exploit, sounding an alarm for what lies ahead as the current order frays.

Everyone should read this book!

Sexton does a masterful job of showing how the state and conservative religious entities have partnered throughout history to consolidate power and wealth to the detriment of the people. A scary, but crucial, read.

Great narration, interesting topic
Revisado: 05-12-23
After a trip to the Satanic Temple in Salem, I purchased this audiobook to learn more. I now have a better understanding of TST’s brand of Satanism, how it differs from the Church of Satan, and why the work of TST is so important. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
The Yaga siblings—Bellatine, a young woodworker, and Isaac, a wayfaring street performer and con artist—have been estranged since childhood, separated both by resentment and by wide miles of American highway. But when they learn that they are to receive an inheritance, the siblings agree to meet—only to discover that their bequest isn’t land or money, but something far stranger: a sentient house on chicken legs.

Historia
Based on his provocative and popular New York Times op-ed, The Man They Wanted Me to Be is both memoir and cultural analysis. Jared Yates Sexton alternates between an examination of his working class upbringing and historical, psychological, and sociological sources that examine the genesis of toxic masculinity and its consequences for society. The Man They Wanted Me to Be examines how we teach boys what's expected of men in America, and the long-term effects of that socialization-which include depression, shorter lives, misogyny, and suicide.

Interesting, insightful
Revisado: 02-09-20
Jared’s story of the abuses he and his mother suffered at the hands of men subscribed to the myth of masculinity is often difficult to listen to. It is a story well told, though, and Sexton does a great job of making it easy to understand how the patriarchy exploits many and is exploited by others. I saw people I know in this story, and my guess is that you will, too. Sheds light on the rise of the malignant force in the White House. Highly recommended.

Superb narration, engaging story
Revisado: 01-28-20
Sophie Amoss’s voice acting on this book is just amazing. A pleasure to listen to! The writing is utterly brilliant in places, and the story itself is interesting, both in plot and in the type of people the story is told through. This is not a stereotypical western with white heroes. Refreshing and thought provoking.

Leah Remini is a badass goddess
Revisado: 01-28-20
After watching Leah Remini’s TV show, Scientology and the Aftermath, my friend Mollie dubbed Leah a “badass goddess.” This book is more evidence of that fact. Engaging, maddening, funny, sad and ultimately hopeful, Leah’s book is engrossing, and her narration fabulous. Once you start listening, you won’t want to stop!
