Compelling tale, compelling performance.
Revisado: 12-02-22
There’s consensus that this is a work of narrative genius as it was written. Time hasn’t lessened its power. And this performance by Ms Spacek adds a dimension to the experience that shouldn’t be missed. 5 stars aren’t enough.

Historia
Dombey and Son is vintage Dickens and explores the classic themes of betrayal, cruelty and deceit. Dombey's dysfunctional relationships are painted against a backdrop of social unrest in industrialized London, which is populated by a host of fascinating and memorable secondary characters. The complete and unabridged novel is brought spectacularly to life by veteran reader David Timson.

Timson’s narration is exceptionally good, voicing many varied characters in individual and compelling ways. It make this good but not-quite- great Dickens novel a singular treat.

Historia
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

Compelling and little appreciated American History
Revisado: 04-21-22
Deeply researched, well-organized and well-told history of the other kind of American Exceptionalism. I think it’s essential reading for anyone who wants an understanding of race in America and, more generally, of the causes of social and economic inequities that so fragment the country at the moment.

Austin’s wonderful phrasing, eloquent irony and fine character studies rescue a pretty ordinary story and Stevenson’s narration makes it a real joy to experience.

This Audible Exclusive performance features a unique introduction written and narrated by Miriam Margolyes. Recognised as one of Dickens' most accomplished titles, Bleak House has impressed critics and audiences alike since it was first published in 1852. The novel boasts one of the most intelligent and engaging plots in all of English literature and is sure to engage the listener's imagination as it transports us back in time to the seedy, grimy and hazardous streets of Victorian London.

A Great Performance
Revisado: 08-03-19
This is my least favorite Dickens book. The story is pretty transparent and the heroine is a bit tedious. But Dickens’ sense of the inequities of his age, and his great talent for irony, always make for good reading. The main attraction here though is the narration, which is really splendid. It is a true artistic performance.

Historia
In Madame Bovary, one of the great novels of 19th-century France, Flaubert draws a deeply felt and sympathetic portrait of a woman who, having married a country doctor and found herself unhappy with a rural, genteel existence, longs for love and excitement. However, her aspirations and her desires to escape only bring her further disappointment and eventually lead to unexpected, painful consequences. Flaubert’s critical portrait of bourgeois provincial life remains as powerful as ever

Wonderful narrator; dull, plodding story
Revisado: 04-09-17
I tried this because I so enjoy Juliet Stevenson's narrations, which are always true performances. But after about halfway, I couldn't stick with it. The storyline might have been sensational at the time but is tame now and I found the characters, exhaustively explained, uninteresting.

Historia
The Middle East is a critically important area of our world. And, with its current prominence in international affairs, media images of the Middle East reach us on a daily basis. Much media coverage, however, is incomplete at best, failing to take account of either the complexities or the historical background of this pivotal region. For most of us, the real story of the Middle East remains untold. What made this crucial geopolitical area what it is today?

Valuable perspective
Revisado: 06-07-16
This course, with excellent narration, provides detailed and engaging historical perspective on the rich history of middle eastern religious and political figures and entities. The contribution of Arab and Islamic culture to human thought and development is sorely under-appreciated in current US conversation. This set of lectures is a very worthwhile effort to shine real light on important historical realities and their connection to today.

Historia
A man shoots down a drone that is flying over his private property. A retail store uses predictive data analytics to send pregnancy-related advertising to a teenager who has not told her parents about her condition. A police officer places a GPS device on a suspected criminal's car to follow him and build a case against him. The news is full of such stories, in which new technologies lead to dilemmas that could not have been imagined just a few decades ago.

Excellent survey of important issues.
Revisado: 04-14-16
Prof R ably presents a thoughtful canvas of important issues concerning surveillance goals and technology in the hands of government and private people and corporations. He comes from a political background that I don't share and I found myself at odds a few times with some his opinions but they were always presented as such and never interfered with presentation of the subject matter. This is a well done survey of information and ideas to which all of us should pay serious attention.
