Historia
Tarak is thrown into a strange city with just a few coppers in his pocket and the tainted shadow of his family following him. At least the ale is better, but famine and poverty make it a little hard to enjoy that. With no one to call his friend and almost no knowledge of sorcery, Tarak will have to compete with the best sorcerers if he wishes to remain free.

Endless boring details about notes of magic. Does not contribute to story.
Revisado: 09-20-24
Basis of story interesting but turned into tedious details that do not add to story. Becomes a book about how to do magic instead of a story about people and their lives and resolutions of their difficulties. Not very interesting. Not sure I can finish listening.

Well I liked it …
Revisado: 04-18-23
I have listened to maybe 1000 or more audiobooks … And the voice actors were very good, And the writing was very good. And the story entirely kept my interest. I absolutely wanted to know what made Cat do what she did. What drove her to such extreme action. She is a bit of a Thelma and Louise character except with a more satisfying ending. Her motives are entirely understandable if morally questionable. I give it five stars and look forward to more from this author.

Writing discrepancies.
Zombies yuck.
Mediocre character development.
Yet story still has interest and imagination and writes not bad enough too make me lose interest completely.

Historia
In her first novel since 2002, Nebula and Hugo award-winning author Connie Willis returns with a stunning, enormously entertaining novel of time travel, war, and the deeds - great and small - of ordinary people who shape history. In the hands of this acclaimed storyteller, the past and future collideand the result is at once intriguing, elusive, and frightening.

Repetitious Boring Moaning!
Revisado: 08-28-11
Need I say more? How about Repetitious Aggravating Maddening Extremely Boring Moaning. She repeats almost verbatim the same whining conversations and idiotic choices made by the characters over and over and over and over and over and over... Yet I did listen all the way through (mostly). And still want to know what happened in All Clear. I just do not know if I can make myself listen to an even longer book which according to other reviewers is more of the same. Spoiler anyone? The narrator by the way is excellent. 5 Stars to Katherine Kellgren. And to Connie Willis, "Girl, you need a better editor or perhaps need to listen to the one you have." I am not an editor but I have read and listened to a huge number of books in my life and really Connie this one is just not OK. Good story but execution poor.

I loved this book. Written before her Bridget Jones books, it definitely has a more serious tone - the subject matter being famine and politics in Africa and the hypocritical, self-absorbed behavior of the rich and famous. Yet the book still has plenty of her signature humor and despite the heaviness of the subject at times is still essentially an enjoyable read. And it made me laugh out loud which I don't often do when I read (listen) even if I am amused by a book. I understand she has written a new book - something about a spy - and I hope that it too will make it to Audible.
