Historia
Legendary bush pilot Josie Jonson can’t believe her luck when a skilled builder just happens to show up after she purchases land near Prentiss Pond. All Mark Redmond asks in return for building Josie’s dream cabin is that he be left alone to homeschool his 12-year-old daughter, Cady. For Maine game warden investigator Mike Bowditch, the intensity of Redmond's secretiveness is troubling, especially in light of suspicious criminal activity being reported around the area―including rumors of an armed man offering large sums of money in exchange for the location of Redmond and Cady.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 07-09-24
I’ve read all of Doiron’s books and have enjoyed most of them very much, being a Maine native who has traveled and lived in multiple parts of the State. I particularly like his concise yet descriptive writing style and the consistently good narration of the audiobooks. I had been anxiously awaiting the release of Pitch Dark.
This was the first time I was unsettled by some of the major subject matters; how slowly the the major character’s development unfolded, the limits it demonstrated some parents are willing to go to, and the ways he showed how sociopaths can mask and alter their behaviors.
The killings felt more gruesome to me and more senseless, and these weren’t balanced by other elements in the story that made it all less unsettling on the whole. I did like how all the events that Mike experienced left him in the end with many different thoughts about fatherhood.
This was not a thumbs up for me personally.
How about a slight change in focus away from just the human race, which we all need a break from these days? Perhaps something about a bear on the rampage in the middle of the winter due to climate change?

Great narration!
Revisado: 04-19-24
I listened to the samples of various audio books of this title trying to find one with a good narrator. Very glad I chose this one as the many different characters and dialects were masterfully undertaken by this narrator. It made the listening experience similar to attending a play reading.

Poor recording
Revisado: 11-09-23
Volume and clarity at end of phrases and sentences was poor. And sometimes there were short skips. Part of this was a recording quality issue and to a smaller extent a narration issue. Enjoyed the story line.

Historia
Maine Game Warden Mike Bowditch accompanies his old friend and mentor, retired bush pilot Charley Stevens, as he pays a visit to a mysterious woman, the widow of a Vietnam vet, living in isolation in the Maine wilderness. Many years earlier, she had called Charley, then a young game warden himself, for help. She claimed that her badly bleeding husband had been attacked by a rabid bat. But in the succeeding days, despite her husband's increasingly erratic and aggressive behavior, his wife resisted Charley's attempts to help, arousing his suspicions that more was going on than met the eye.

As a Mainer, I love all things Doiron! Just wish this one was a little bit longer.
