Historia
The Bartender' s Tale stars Tom Harry and his 12-year-old son, Rusty, who live alone and run a bar in a small Montana town in the early 1960s. Their lives are upended when Proxy, a woman from Tom's past, and her beatnik daughter, Francine, breeze into town. Is Francine, as Proxy claims, the unsuspected legacy of her and Tom’s past? Without a doubt she is an unsettling gust of the future, upending every certainty in Rusty’s life and generating a mist of passion and pretense that seems to obscure everyone’s vision but his own.

A beautiful story, beautifully told
Revisado: 12-05-24
This is an immersive tale of family, friendship and hard work in a mid-century world. I fell in love with the characters.
The narration of the character, Del, was grating. It really stood out - not in a good way - but that took very little away from this entrancing book.

Historia
Jessie Black's successful prosecution of a serial murderer and rapist put her on the path to stardom at the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. Public defender Jack Ackerman represented the opposition, and his spectacular public breakdown after the trial put him in a mental institution and gave Frank Ramsey a second chance at freedom. Started slow, but ended up being a great read
Revisado: 10-20-24
I ordered this from the Plus catalog, and almost stopped reading after the first couple of chapters. I decided to stay with it, and I am very glad I did.
The characters are well-developed and it's hard to tell who are the good guys and the bad guys (mostly), which is one of the things that made the story so good.
The book has its share of surprises, making it hard to put down once I got into it.
Highly recommend.

Entertaining, smart, and well-performed
Revisado: 10-20-24
You would think this book would not have interested me since I'd never heard of the author/actor, and have not watched even one episode pf Little House on the Prarie. I am, however, a fan of the books.
I saw this recommended on a Reddit thread about memoirs, and then discovered it was a free read. I took a chance, not expecting much, and was completely amazed by her story, and the grace with which she told it.
I loved all the behind-the-scenes stories about the show and her time in Hollywood.
She has done amazing things with her life.

At 48, Marian Kahn, a professor of history at Columbia, has reached a comfortable perch. Married, wealthy, and the famed discoverer of the 18th-century adventuress, Lady Charlotte Wilcox, she ought to be content. I love this author, so I ignored the reviews about this title.
While the book is well-written (which is why I hung in there and finished), it is definately not up to her standards.

Revisado: 09-15-24
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. The main characters were well-crafted and the story engaging. The only thing that prevented me from giving this 5 stars was the fact that some of the storyline skirted the bounds of believability. But. . . .this was Hollywood, after all.

Excellent premise for a book
Revisado: 08-18-24
This was an unusual plot and I was intrigued by the concept.
Unfortunately, there was a great deal of repetition that caused the story to drag. Either a great editor was needed, or perhaps this could have been a dynamic short story.
I am glad I read it and will check into other titles by this author, but feel this could have easily been a 5 star read with some major editing.

Historia
Performance artists Caleb and Camille Fang dedicated themselves to making great art. But when an artist's work lies in subverting normality, it can be difficult to raise well-adjusted children. Just ask Buster and Annie Fang. For as long as they can remember, they starred (unwillingly) in their parents' madcap pieces. But now that they are grown up, the chaos of their childhood has made it difficult to cope with life outside the fishbowl of their parents' strange world.

Kevin Wilson is a genius
Revisado: 12-17-23
As is the pattern with Kevin Wilson, this book draws you into a world inhabited by quirky characters doing improbable things. This would (to me) not normally be a good thing, but in Wilson's hands, it is.
I found myself to be completely sucked into the very strange world of the Fang family and, like Abby and Buster, completely accepting of the idiosyncraciies of their strange parents.
This is a delightful, heartfelt story.
The narration is masterful, as is always the case with Plummer.

Lewis Madigan is young, gay, out of work, and getting antsy when he’s roped into providing end-of-life care for his insufferable homophobic neighbor, Chester Wheeler. Lewis doesn’t need the aggravation, just the money. The only requirements: run errands, be on call, and put up with a miserable old churl no one else in Buffalo can bear. After exchanging barbs, bickering, baiting, and pushing buttons, Chester hits Lewis with the big ask. Lewis can’t say no to a dying wish.

Everything about this book is great
Revisado: 12-16-23
I took a chance on this during a 2 for 1 sale, and have ended up recommending this to everyone who will listen to me.
I was skeptical at first . . . curmudgeonly, dying man on a road trip with reluctant, gay man had the potential to be predictable and sappy.
WRONG.
If you are skeptical, don't be.
Just read it.

A great story destroyed by the narration
Revisado: 12-16-23
Catherine Ryan Hyde is a masterful storyteller. \this is not her greatest work, but it is still a finely-crafted story.
However, the narration is abysmal. The voice of the child, Willa, and Melanie, one of the squatters, is jarring. I do realize that it was the author's intent to have Melanie be obnoxious and for Willa to be loud . . . but it was overdone.
The rest of the narration was stilted.
I bought this during the epic sale at the beginning of December. I am glad I did not use a credit for this, and I'm even glad I listened. I rrecommend that, if you want to read this book, that you read a physical copy.
