Historia
The Russian Revolution of 1917 was one of the most cataclysmic events in world history, profoundly shaping politics, international relations, social patterns, economics and science in the century that followed. It created long-lasting aftershocks which travelled far beyond its geographical borders. How did it happen? What were the sequence of events that led, following the shocking upheaval of the old Romanov order, to a fierce and violent rivalry between a variety of revolutionary factions and the ultimate victory of the Bolsheviks?

A fascinating read--wonderfully instructive, clearly exposited and challenging in its insights
Revisado: 02-01-25
Absolutely fascinating! --a detailed exposition of events beginning with the February revolt along with its background through the October insurrection culminating in the communist assumption of power. Appendices provide a fascinating exposition of Trotsky's view of Stalin's rise, his view of Stalin's betrayal of Lenin's formulations and the ultimately profound differences between them which was in the final analysis to lead to his murder in Mexico. One may not agree with all of Trotsky's formulations but it is hard not to admire the breadth, clarity and depth of this presentation as well as his challenge to the all too common oversimplifications and shiboliths of most "Western" writers.

Historia
It’s 1914, and World War I is ceaselessly churning through thousands of young men on both sides of the fight. The violence of the front feels far away to Henry Gaunt, Sidney Ellwood and the rest of their classmates, safely ensconced in their idyllic boarding school in the English countryside. News of the heroic deaths of their friends only makes the war more exciting. Gaunt, half German, is busy fighting his own private battle—an all-consuming infatuation with his best friend, the glamorous, charming Ellwood—without a clue that Ellwood is pining for him in return

Truth, tragedy and beauty
Revisado: 09-11-24
An exquisite piece of literature that perfectly captures the glorious tragedy of this thing we call man, this infinitismal speck of existence fighting to create meaning and beauty within the heedless and inexorable march of events we call history.

Revisado: 09-23-22
This book provides an amazing study of the origins of society full of accounts of peoples most of us have not even known the existence of over many many thousands of years. It challenges everything that has generally been taught or assumed to be correct concerning the origin of the way we now live and for an old world opens up vistas of optimistic promise for the future.

An amazing book; a great read
Revisado: 03-03-22
I have read many books and articles about the development of the Enlightenment. This one, however, is one of the very few which approaches the problem not from the backward looking perspective of the ideas we now have and how we came to have them but rather mostly from the forward looking perspective of the millions of ideas being put forward in that time of intellectual turmoil and how they struggled with one another, pushing some to the fore, ignoring or throwing others away, mashing some togther creating results not anticipated, until out of the fabric of that human comedy of ideas something was ultimately stitched together making the world of thought which we call today. Delightful and awe inspiring in its breadth of knowledge.

Historia
Four decades after Ronald Reagan’s landslide win in 1980, Jimmy Carter’s one-term presidency is often labeled a failure; indeed, many Americans view Carter as the only ex-president to have used the White House as a stepping-stone to greater achievements. But in retrospect the Carter political odyssey is a rich and human story, marked by both formidable accomplishments and painful political adversity. In this deeply researched, brilliantly written account, Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Kai Bird deftly unfolds the Carter saga as a tragic tipping point in American history.

Revisado: 07-31-21
What a fine book! What a fine reader! and, in retrospect, what an amazing person Jimmy Carter is! I found the well presented material for much of the Carter presidency highly interesting and became so faacinated that I found myself searching for any additional minutes within my busy day that I could find to listen to this book that I had a hard time putting down. It leaves me, hefty though it is, with a wish to start all over and go through the book yet once again.
