Wild ride!
Revisado: 11-16-24
If you are fan of fast-paced crime thrillers, Fortunate Son will not disappoint! Think Dan Brown or early Tom Clancy. Fun, intelligent, escapist fiction. Narrator’s pace felt a little slow. Listening on 1.2 speed was perfect.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

James McBride is a master storyteller. His beautifully developed characters and interwoven plot lines paint a stunning portrait of race relations in postwar America.

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

One of the very best
Revisado: 01-10-19
I have listened to 2-3 Audible books per month for more than 15 years. This is one of my all-time favorites. Great story, great characters, great narration. Can’t wait to read John Boyne’s other books!

Historia
In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world" moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all - beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn.

Cliche
Revisado: 03-26-16
Really liked Nightengale. I don't know what magic authors work to make characters and settings seem meaningful and rich. This book didn't have that. These characters and situations seemed cliche and predictable at every turn. The narration was over emotional... Reminded me of a YA romance novel.

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Spectacular
Revisado: 04-14-11
This is a great listen, beautifully written and narrated. I understand the author generally writes teen fiction? This book is mislabled as such, if so. Don't let that classification sway you away from buying it. You won't regret your purchase.

Historia
The misery of waiting for a connecting flight at an airport leads to the accidental discovery of alighting on other planes - not airplanes but planes of existence. Ursula Le Guin's deadpan premise frames a series of travel accounts by the tourist-narrator who describes bizarre societies and cultures that sometimes mirror our own, and sometimes open puzzling doors into the alien.

Social Fiction
Revisado: 03-23-06
Le Guin is normally housed in bookstores under science fiction. Not normally a fan of the genre, this is the first book of hers I've "read." It's not "Star Wars" science fiction. Instead it's a look at what societies in parallel universes might be like if they weighed social and ethical responsibilities differently than we humans do here on earth. It's a GREAT, thought-provoking listen. I hope Audible will carry more of her stuff. Narrator does a great job, too.
