I gave a four stars, even though the average of five (storyline) and one (narration) is lower, but I have to go by the story more than the almost histrionic narration.

I just love the bastards' stories, truly I do, and I can't wait for the next one, but I am hoping MacLean will use a different narrator. Her overly-dramatic reading was off-putting in the first book, but all the "evers" (forever, ever, and ever) were so drawn out at the end of this second book, I was cringing and laughing at the absurdity of it. I was on a walk and was mocking her evvaaahhhhhs as I walked. I'm sure I looked ridiculous/insane, but I just couldn't listen to it without mocking the cartoonish reading. It's really a pity, because the story is amazing and you fall in love with each bastard SO easily. I have the third book on pre-order, but if it's Eyre again, I may get a refund and just read it for myself - forevvaaaaahhhhhh.

I enjoyed the story but wish I'd have just read it myself. The narrator is one I have to get used to at the beginning of every book (she sounds breathily melodramatic) but I didn't mind with the last book I heard (Brazen and the Beast)

However, this book's overuse of "ever" and "forever" in the last chapters was ridiculous, given the narrator's penchant for dramatic flair. If you are forced by the text to say a word a dozen times in approximately the same number of minutes, at least vary the WAY you say it.

Story-wise, it's a good tale that I enjoyed (though I won't evahhhh say "ever"... pretty much forevahhhh) and I liked the H/h's conflict, I liked the banter between them, I liked the h's ingenuity, and loved the backstory on the H. The "keeping them apart" didn't seem to drag on too long, and the love scenes were well written (oh mercy!) But the last chapters need a thesaurus - and Ms. Eyre's delivery makes that fact stick out like a very sore thumb.

I sure liked the other two in this series better. things just seemed a little too convenient, at the end. and the mine I heard the Seinfeld quote, that sealed it for me. meh.

This was the second Nicole McCaffrey book I listened to, and it was every bit as good as the first. I love the whiskey-voice that Dawson McBride has, and it just lent itself to this story so well. I felt the characters were well-rounded, I had the feeling that I KNEW them by the end of the story and was sad to have the tale end. There was just enough tension and "impending danger" to keep me worrying for the characters. Great job, Ms McCaffrey and Mr McBride!

it was a nice Surrey, but it seemed like we just kept rehashing the same dilemma over and over...

oh my gosh. I read this book several years ago and enjoyed it. I thought I would like having it read to me by a professional narrator. I was wrong. the reader sounded like a British-accented Captain Kirk trying to overdramatize something. Some of the chapter breaks ("Chapter Four" for example) sounded like she was having an attack of the vapors, "Giles, get my smelling salts, won't you please..." Killed the whole story, for me. While I could tell some differences between the characters' voices, all the men -- most annoyingly the Hero's -- were nasal and whiny-sounding. He sounded almost petulant, the entire book. I will avoid this reader's performances in the future. Like the plague.

The characters were so likeable, the story was very interesting, and Ms. Wells brought the characters to life in her performance.

I liked the characters, and the villains were certainly evil enough to be feared (I love a good "bad guy"). but there were times where I felt the actions were incoungruous. one sentence tells how strongly she detests her husband, wishes he were truly dead, then "but she couldn't bear to see him in pain" and back to her mistrust. it seemed like opposite ends of a spectrum, for me, too vastly oscillating. The were a few others, but I can't recall them at this moment.

Character development was good outside that one problem I mentioned, which seemed to afflict both main players, and the other things they did send in keeping with their described personalities (she did go from one extreme to another at the end, if I can say that without spoilering anything. That would be another instance of the vascillation that could have been smoothed a bit)

Overall, an enjoyable tale and, as always, Ms Landor's performance was impeccable.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this particular reader for this SEP book. I was sad to see she was only chosen to do two of SEP's works. I thought she did a great job capturing what I call the 'cheeky' feel that Phillips' books seem to have, and her portrayal (along with how well it was written) of Colin and SugarBeth was perfect. I say this because I felt that I really "knew" these characters, having read the book a few times in ENglish and once in German. The attitude comes through, no matter the language, and this reader nailed it, IMO.
