To keep things interesting, Chuck and Sofia decide to revive a past tradition from their summer camp days—also known as the dawning of sluthood.

Darling, you don't need frills but don't lose your gorgeous backbone
Revisado: 10-14-24
I did enjoy the magnificent Miss Phyrne Fisher the author depicting her without the usual frills. Also allowing a more human with all of of her weakness laid bare. I did love brilliant little man and the depth of all the circus folks. As having a view into their world.
The brutality of the story was hard to hear. I love the Phyrne for serveral reasons. One being that she chooses her lovers not from a lack of confidence more from her own personal strength. She knows who is she and what she wants. She doesn't need her chosen paramour. She just goes with her desires. This alone makes me adore her.
However, in Blood and Circuses it was hard to adjust that she chose the clown from a place vulnerability. Yes she still refuses to give him up, but it wasn't the usual Phryne.
*SPOILER AHEAD*
Then the brutal treatment by the victim's financée (no matter how much grief the character experienced) was abominable. The slut shaming, violence and sexual assault was unacceptable.
I wish there was another way to have show the indomitable strength put heroine has without the barbarism.
Still I'm on to the next story. I do love a good mystery.

BONE AND SICKLE explores historical topics related to folklore and horror. With acerbic wit and a scholarly penchant for the grotesque, rogue folklorist Al Ridenour delves into a wide but carefully curated range of topics illustrated by stories from historical texts. Narratives are given dramatic readings by “Mrs. Karswell” (Sarah Chavez) backed by richly produced soundscapes blending original music, sound design and effects. The source books, though real enough, are said to be pulled from an imaginary library on Ridenour’s imaginary estate situated somewhere in the neighborhood of ...

When Lister got drunk, he really got drunk! After celebrating his birthday with a Monopoly-board pub crawl around London, he came to in a burger bar on one of Saturns moons, wearing a lady's pink crimplene hat and a pair of yellow fishing waders, with no money and a passport in the name of "Emily Berkenstein". Joining the Space Corps seemed a good idea.

If I had to be shipwrecked and comatose I'd love to have Chris Barrie (that brilliant impressionist) reading out the scripts of Red Dwarf while perfectly voicing each member of the crew. I only wish that Chris Barrie had more books on audible he is an utter delight to the ears.

Historia
A touring theatre company in New Zealand forms the basis of one of Marsh’s most ambitious and innovative novels. New Zealand theatrical manager Alfred Meyer wanted to celebrate his wife’s birthday in style. The piece de résistance would be the jeroboam of champagne which would descend gently into a nest of fern and coloured lights on the table, set up on stage after the performance. But something went horribly wrong. Chief Detective Inspector Alleyn witnessed it himself.

Vintage Murder was rather bland. I caught myself drifting off and trying to hurry towards the conclusion. I do adore this series however this novel could be skipped in my opinion. The narrator James Saxon did a wonderful job, yet the story just wasn't there.

The poison was cyanide, slipped into the sacred wine of ecstasy just before it was presented to Miss Cara Quayne at the House of the Sacred Flame. The victim was a deeply religious initiate who had trained for a month for her last ceremony. She was also a very beautiful woman.... The suspects were the other initiates and the high priest. All claimed they were above earthly passions. But Cara Quayne had provoked lust, jealousy - and murder.

This nationally best-selling novel from Pulitzer Prize-winner Jeffrey Eugenides was adapted into an acclaimed film by Academy Award-winner Sofia Coppola. A haunting yet wickedly funny tale, The Virgin Suicides has captivated countless readers with its intoxicating portrait of lost innocence. A brilliant fusion of dark humor and tragedy, it is an atmospheric, allegorical masterpiece about five oppressed, suicidal sisters and the boys who dream of rescuing them.

if you like to cuddle up with sorrow
Revisado: 03-24-22
The Virgin Suicides is a beautiful piece of word art. How Jeffrey Eugenides wrote the neighborhood boys narrative is haunting and poetic. The book reads like one of JD Salinger's proses where the meat of the body of work is in the characters and the illusions/feelings others build up around them. (Much to the heartbreak of everyone involved.) Sofia Coppola's film to me is Jeffrey Eugenides' vision. The only reason I rated this version so low is that Giovanni Ribisi's voice wasn't used. Please pay the artist for an unbridged version Audible pretty please with store credits (bought by the customers of course) sprinkled on top?!

Headstrong and beautiful, the young housemaid Sally Jupp is put rudely in her place, strangled in her bed behind a bolted door. Coolly brilliant policeman Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard must find her killer among a houseful of suspects, most of whom had very good reason to wish her ill. Cover Her Face is P. D. James' electric debut novel, an ingeniously plotted mystery that immediately placed her among the masters of suspense.

Revisado: 03-11-22
I typically do enjoy murders in the quiet English village motifs, however, at times I felt it would have been a better short prose rather than a novel. The plot dragged some and if it wasn't for the appeal of the characters I would've lost interest. I do feel that P.D. James is a great writer and that perhaps this was just a dud and I am willing to continue with the series. It's just a shame about the narrator. I can appreciate a quiet if not subdued performance as long as it doesn't hinder the pace of the plot, but, as before mentioned above it was rather dull.

The dapper, mustache-twirling little Belgian with the egg-shaped head and curious mannerisms has solved some of the most puzzling crimes of the century - and, in his own humble opinion, is "probably the greatest detective in the world". In this complete collection of more than 50 stories, ranging from short tales to novellas, Poirot faces violent murders, poisonings, kidnappings, and thefts - all solved with his characteristic panache. Only Agatha Christie could have devised cases worthy of Hercule Poirot's skill and "little gray cells".

Father Ambrosio, the most pious and venerated monk in all of Madrid, is held as a paragon of virtue. But after 30 years of study and prayer, evil thoughts begin to permeate his mind. As two plots cleverly converge, torture, murder, incest, rape, poison, and magic prevail, sustained by an elegance in the writing of the 19-year-old Matthew Lewis.

Exquisitely Sinister
Revisado: 12-31-21
The Monk is the ideal gothic novel with all the shamefully enthralling details.
To mention a few profane parts there's a bloody nun ghost with a grisly history;
a femme fatale hidden under holy robes to corrupt an virtuous Abbot blinded by his vanity.
I disliked the rape and murder of one of the woefully innocent characters.
However, the rest was enthralling and I sampled several of the other narrators and
wasn't disappointed with my choice with Nicholas Boulton. He really held my interest
considering The Monk was written in the 1700's.
Interestingly, Georgina Sutton actually sang the songs that were in the story and
read one or two parts for the female characters, although, mostly read by Boulton.
Definitely, worth the money or credit.
