Good but could have been so much better

I enjoyed listening to this book. I just wish there were more stories about Addie’s adventures. Every time I was taken back into the past with her I’d hope I was about to hear a story about her escapes as an invisible girl and instead it was another interaction between her and the darkness. There were so many opportunities to tell her fascinating story and instead I got yet another rehashing about her complicated relationship with the darkness. This book was so close to being excellent and I just feel a little cheated.

Very good, but not great

Like others have said, this reads more like YA than the original. I still really enjoyed listening and would absolutely recommend it, just with the caveat that the style is very different than THT. The first book felt almost ethereal. It was shadowy and never totally exposed Gilead or the characters and was more powerful for it. This book is simpler and lacks the nuance of its predecessor. However, it was still extremely satisfying and I definitely binge listened to it in a couple of days.

Well, it certainly sounds amazing. Spoiler alert...never diet again! When I read this, I assumed I was dragging my feet about starting my next diet because I was a fat, lazy slob. But maybe I am just totally burnt out on diets. I hope this is all true. I hope that I can just learn to feel my hunger cues again and that will be it. Fingers crossed!

I enjoyed this story. I thought the narrator did a good job and never found her voice annoying or something I needed to get used to. I was never bored or hoping for it to end. I just found it hard to care about these characters. It was always like I was on the edge of understanding or becoming interested in them but I never really got there. It was like the author herself really didn’t seem to understand them all very well. They just didn’t seem particularly authentic. Also, the author would often spell out an idea instead of just letting the reader understand it with just the context of the story. At times I felt she was assuming her readers were not intelligent enough to pick up on a subtle theme so she needed to bash everyone over the head with it. I couldn’t help but sometimes think “she must think her audience is dumb or she’d never have written that.” Overall, I think the story was enjoyable and the narrator perfectly fine. Just don’t be surprised to find yourself rolling your eyes at the narrator a few (or many) times.
