This book was a disappointment. I really liked The Circle, but this seems like a poor follow-up. The main character (Delaney) is hard to like. The premise of the book is that she gets a job with The Every because she wants to go in and destroy it from the inside. So the author set himself up with a difficult task. How can you make the reader like a character who is basically deceitful almost all the time? I do not think he succeeded.

I got the Kindle version and the Audible version so I could go back and forth. The narration is really bad, in my opinion, The narrator chose to use a really snarky tone, which was very irritating. It seemed like a mismatch with the actual tone of the writing.

Seriously, every time I have listened to one of these podcasts, I have discovered a new listen or learned something about books. Highly recommended.

I don't have kids but heard about this audiobook from the Auddicted podcast. I enjoyed it immensely. The story is creative and fun, the characters engaging, and the music is just fabulous. As a bonus, they included a last "chapter" that is just all the music, which is really thoughtful because I thought I'd have to go through and bookmark all the songs.

The main character/narrator seems very real, and there is enough detail and background information about the society to make it seem like something like this could really happen. The result is a very thought-provoking book. It seems like you are reading an actual diary from a totalitarian society.

Would you listen to When They Call You a Terrorist again? Why?

This book taught me so much. Despite the difficulties Patrisse and her family (and community) have endured, her attitude is one of both hope and practical action. I learned a lot from her listening the first time, and I would listen again, maybe in a year or two, to be reminded of these lessons.

What did you like best about this story?

What I liked best is the way Patrisse is able to pull a community of friends and family together to support each other through good times and bad. In my view, this is one of the most important things she brings to the discussion of race relations. That when a people is persecuted, they learn to support each other, because the society is not supporting them. I want to further explore how I can be like this, too, and how I can help with the process she has begun with Black Lives Matter. The other most important thing she adds to the discussion is the impact of mental illness, how it complicated the issues for her own family, and the impact to the black community of men being unjustly imprisoned and treated with such cruelty when in jail or prison.

What about Patrisse Khan-Cullors’s performance did you like?

Patrisse has a warm, friendly voice. Her reading makes it seem like you are sitting down to talk with a friend when she launches into stories of her past. It is riveting.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made my heart ache for the problems of race in America, how compassion in general is so lacking in the world, and how progress seems so elusive.

Any additional comments?

This book and several others I've read recently should be required reading. I would also especially recommend Ta-Nehisi Coates's Between the World and Me. The authors' outlooks are quite different in some ways, but both are beautifully written and important books.
