Historia
In many ways, we’re more comfortable than ever before. But could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives actually be the leading cause of many our most urgent physical and mental health issues? In this gripping investigation, award-winning journalist Michael Easter seeks out off-the-grid visionaries, disruptive genius researchers, and mind-body conditioning trailblazers who are unlocking the life-enhancing secrets of a counterintuitive solution: discomfort.

Too many F-bombs for the subject matter
Revisado: 04-24-25
I was really interested in the material but got slapped back to reality each time a casual fxxx was inserted. Distracting.

Historia
Wit’s End isn’t just a state of mind. It’s the name of a gravel road, the address of a rundown, off-the-grid cabin, 120 shabby square feet of fixer-upper Patrick Hutchison purchased on a whim in the mossy woods of the Cascade Mountains in Washington state. To say Hutchison didn’t know what he was getting into is no more an exaggeration than to say he’s a man with nearly zero carpentry skills. Well, used to be. You can learn a lot over six years of renovations. CABIN is the story of those renovations, but it's also a love story; of a place, of possibilities, and of the process of construction.

The author reignited my vision of acquiring a dry cabin for escape. His experience showed me how town look for the diamond in the rough. I appreciate his insight, tips, and story. Encouraging accounts, and funny quips.

Historia
The Trail is a moving story of how nature helps us find what’s missing in our lives. The tale begins with Gil, who in the wake of his father’s death and recently fired from his job, agrees to accompany his father’s old hiking partner Syd on a month-long trek on the John Muir Trail. There’s just one problem: Gil hates camping and is woefully unprepared for the rigors of the journey. Moreover, he soon learns Syd may not survive the hike.

overall good read. does have profanity and adult serial content
Revisado: 04-09-25
I enjoyed the humor throughout the book, and the tips at the end for new hikers. I fully expect this book to become a movie. it is a lot like A walk in the Woods, and I think better than Wild. The author is quite talented. The ending chapters were a bit too philosophical for me, and references quite a lot of literature, authors, and ideology that I zipped through. I do agree that everyone should slow down, and I personally thank God for the beauty that surrounds us all.

Historia
Christine discovered long distance backpacking while surfing the internet at work. She decided that day to attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. One adventure led to another and a few years later she set out on the Wonderland Trail in Mt Rainier National Park. Her Rugged Outdoors Woman persona started as a joke, a nod to the outdoor adventurer that she wished to be. But in the years since, she has come into her own as a backpacker, rock climber, and trail runner. This book is a testament to the decision to name who you want to be and make it so.

Title more about personal demons than the Wonderland atrail
Revisado: 04-01-25
I am finding more and more of these books deceptively about the hike. I wanted to experience the Wonderland adventure but the book deals more with personal pain reflected on during the hike. My heart goes out the the author and I am happy for her learning to love herself. I have been there, now I am grateful for God's beauty in the wilderness and can enjoy that beauty regardless of the crumbling society around me. This author is talented and I hope to read more uplifting adventures from her in the future.

Historia
Just before her 40th birthday, Gail Francis quit her perfectly good job and set out to hike one of the great trails of the world. Carrying everything she needed on her back, Francis spent five months walking from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail. Along the way, she lost her pack scrambling over scree in the desert, struggled to navigate high mountain passes, and wore the soles off her boots trekking across lava fields - all within some of the most pristine wilderness in the nation. Though she set out alone, her story includes an eclectic cast of characters.

Easy listen, encourages others to push through
Revisado: 03-28-25
Gail approaches the hike in an almost child-like wonder. No strong language, includes author's personal opinions and philosophies. while this reader prefers conservative views. the author doesn't push her view, merely occasionally expresses them. The book includes whimsical descriptions and describes what to expect on the PCT. however, this is not a technical planning guide, so please be well researched and prepared for your next adventure.

The idea is simple: You don't have to choose between being a pushover and a jerk. Using Radical Candor - avoiding the perils of Obnoxious Aggression, Manipulative Insincerity, and Ruinous Empathy - you can be kind and clear at the same time. Kim Scott was a highly successful leader at Google before decamping to Apple, where she developed and taught a management class.

Hate the book
Revisado: 03-11-25
rehashing of common sense practices that can be found in The One Minute Manager and similar better reads. Ms. Scott laboriously drags us through hour long chapters, using analogies and language inappropriate for leadership trading. Brash rudeness work well for Larry Wingett, but falls flat in Ms. Scott's attempts. This book was a mandatory read for a class, otherwise I would have stopped and returned it during the first 1/2 hour.

Enjoyable insight into the socially awkward and coping actions

I enjoyed the thorough account, and found the subject, Christopher Knight to be endearing. I wanted to know more about Mr. Knight's current situation but appreciate and recognize that being alone and undisturbed is likely in the very best interest of any individual with severe social anxiety.

Derick Lugo had never been hiking. He certainly couldn't imagine going more than a day without manicuring his goatee. But with a job cut short and no immediate plans, this fixture of the New York comedy scene began to think about what he might do with months of free time. He had heard of the Appalachian Trail, but he had never seriously considered attempting to hike all 2,184.2 miles of it. Suddenly he found himself asking, Could he do it?
