Excellent story, miscast narrator
Revisado: 04-07-25
Love Kate Atkinson’s work and this is no different, however, Ellen Archer wasn’t well suited to narrate this. As usual for the series, this book has characters with a multitude of accents and Ellen Archer has mastery of not one of them; at its best it’s uneven and forced, at its worst it’s comical.

Historia
Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

Interesting but off
Revisado: 11-13-24
The story is interesting but something seems off and b/c it’s intentionally vague and omitting personal info it makes much verification of any of what she claims difficult/impossible. The name of the book itself and the use of other expired terminology is pretty odd for someone with a PhD in the field. It’ll hold attention for sure but whether it should is hard to say. The vocal performance is top tier.

Distracting performance
Revisado: 10-10-24
It’s difficult to really reflect on the writing b/c the performance is so disruptive. Despite the lurid topic there’s a lack of inflection and normal pauses which make it sound like a disaffected teacher near retirement reading out standard testing instructions for the 1 billionth time. The accent appears to be fluent American English but the pronunciation of common words is distractingly non-standard in a way which actually makes the meaning confusing at points; firstly and most humorously “Quantico” but others include “Truman Capote,” “razing,” and the repeatedly used term “garrote.”

Interesting premise, uneven writing
Revisado: 03-12-24
Where the story includes personal elements the writing is at its most interesting, other times it gets extremely dull, quoting casefiles and defending reporting practices in a dry manner. Excessive detail and facts irrelevant to the purpose result in an unnecessarily long book that ultimately ends rather abruptly without much in the way of conclusion.
