Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

No hope or insight here
Revisado: 05-28-24
First, the narrator was terrible. Alexa could have done better.
As to the content... I got this book because I just moved into a town where, as a white person, I'm a minority. That's fine with me; I didn't research demographics before moving, because it isn't an issue. I think (?) I have always treated all people equally, but I thought maybe I don't know as much as I should, and I got this book for more insight into race relations and problems.
The author's main take-away seems to be that everyone is racist - and so to me that term seems meaningless, almost like saying everyone breathes. In my new community, if she thinks I should do anything differently than what I would normally do, I have no idea what that is. By her apparent estimation, I can't help but be a racist, no matter my beliefs or intentions.
Since I listened to the whole book, I guess that means I think it's worthwhile to be aware of her point of view. But if I believed her, I would feel hopeless.

Historia
From the end of the Middle Ages to the First World War, Europe was dominated by one family: the Habsburgs. Their unprecedented rule is the focus of Simon Winder's vivid third book, Danubia. This is a narrative that, while erudite and well researched, prefers to be discursive and anecdotal. In his survey of the centuries of often incompetent Habsburg rule which have continued to shape the fate of Central Europe, Winder does not shy away from the horrors, railing against the effects of nationalism, recounting the violence that was often part of life.

Narrator ruins it
Revisado: 07-06-23
I want to like this book, I suspect it is interesting, but for me, the narrator ruins it. His voice is so monotone, it's difficult to keep attention on what he's saying, and I have to keep backing up the book because I realize I had tuned out.
Worse, though, is the fact that the narrator can't make it through a sentence without having to stop and inhale at least twice. While I feel bad for him with his apparent dyspnea, it's distracting.
I'm giving up on the audio version and will read the Kindle version instead.

An attack at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games would produce one of the defining images of international terrorism. The chilling photo of a hooded man peering from a balcony in the Olympic Village would be viewed worldwide as a horrific symbol of global terrorism.

This is not a download that is advertised. It’s incomplete. Not abridged. It’s missing what should be already paid for.

Fascinating story, intolerable recording
Revisado: 06-20-23
What happened to this recording??? At least once in every paragraph, sentences are cut off so you don't hear the end of the sentence, and the audio skips forward to something else. No way to know what was skipped. After about 20 minutes, I gave up. The original piece was probably good, but shame on Audible for posting this horrible recording.

Historia
If we were as tiny as ants to another being, what would they make of our philosophies? The great satirist Voltaire imagines alien visitors who have opinions. Bedtime stories are narrated by the world's most celebrated voices and written with no beginning, middle, or end so you don't stay up to hear what happens next. They're interesting enough to give your mind something to focus on, but delivered in a way that encourages sleep.

My favorite so far in the sleep series
Revisado: 09-03-20
Initially I didn't think I could fall asleep to one of these "bedtime stories" but I've listened to this at least a dozen times now, and I've never made it past the first 15 or 20 minutes. No idea how it ends. The narrator has a wonderfully soothing voice, the story is weirdly full of calculations like the size of the guy's nose, the circumference of his waist, and how many years he was banned from court... I find my mind drifting until...

Beautiful but way too short to be helpful
Revisado: 09-02-20
I love these sounds, I find them bright and soothing, but five minutes isn't enough to help me off to sleep. I find myself lying there thinking that it's going to be over before I fall asleep LOL. I wish it were at least 20 minutes long (preferably longer) so I would have a good chance of being asleep before it finishes.
