Narration of Morgan was awful
Revisado: 04-09-25
The narrator for the mom, Morgan, sounded like Siri. Just terrible!! She ruined the audiobook for me.

Historia
Summer 1995: Ten-year-old Joan, her mother, and her younger sister flee her father’s explosive temper and seek refuge at her mother’s ancestral home in Memphis. This is not the first time violence has altered the course of the family’s trajectory. Half a century earlier, Joan’s grandfather built this majestic house in the historic Black neighborhood of Douglass—only to be lynched days after becoming the first Black detective in the city. Joan tries to settle into her new life, but family secrets cast a longer shadow than any of them expected.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 02-06-24
Narration was overly dramatic, painfully slow in some places, and the inflection was terrible throughout. The performances almost ruined the book for me. I read it instead of listening to it.

Excellent story of a Marriage
Revisado: 10-29-21
Moriarty tells a wonderful story of a woman experiencing all of the aspects of marriage. In addition, there are interesting subplots. I listened to this while walking and just could not turn it off after I returned home.

Historia
When Blinking Jack Stokes met Ruby Pitt Woodrow, she was twenty and he was forty. She was a carefully raised daughter of Carolina gentry and he was a skinny tenant farmer who had never owned anything in his life. She was newly widowed after a disastrous marriage to a brutal drifter. He had never asked a woman to do more than help him hitch a mule. They didn't fall in love so much as they simply found each other and held on for dear life.

Author shouldn’t narrate
Revisado: 12-04-18
I rate the performance low primarily because of the performance of Kaye Gibbons. She’s an author, but not a good enough actress or performer to make this audiobook enjoyable. Very monotone. Weird cadence. Stick to writing.

Historia
Shocked by a five-month arson spree that left rural Virginia reeling, Washington Post reporter Monica Hesse drove down to Accomack County to cover the trial of Charlie Smith, who pled guilty to 67 counts of arson. But Charlie wasn't lighting fires alone: he had an accomplice - his girlfriend, Tonya Bundick. Through her depiction of the dangerous shift that happened in their passionate relationship, Hesse brilliantly brings to life the once-thriving coastal community and its distressed inhabitants.

Automated Narrator

Any additional comments?
The narrator was the only bad thing about this audiobook. She sounded very much like a computer-generated voice. Her narration distracted from an otherwise good book.
