Historia
Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there. Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth.

Funny and dark story, but narrator a bit of a miss this round
Revisado: 09-20-24
Loved it.
While much darker than Cerulean Sea was, it was still beautiful. You can feel that the children have aged and matured a bit since we last saw them and while you miss the unbridled silliness of them before, the shift feels right.
The villains were terribly believable and Klune did a great job presenting through them the reality that marginalized communities live with on a daily basis.
10/10 will read again.
On that note...I will READ this book again, but am unlikely to listen to it again.
Only quibble: the narrator (in what I believe was an attempt to convey emotion) sounded like they were crying a lot. Like they were in terrible anguish, even in places that were victorious and happy. It was really off putting to listen to (for example) a certain hero arrive on the scene in all their glory and the narrator was describing it like they were crying in sadness. It happened so often and was so jarring that I put down the audiobook for the last hour and just read the physical copy so I could enjoy how the story ended.

WONDERFUL story…rather ruined by the narrator.
Revisado: 07-13-22
Every phrase ends on a down vocal note. Anything within the phrases is read in the same 3 tones in almost the same pattern every single sentence. It is torturous.
Both main characters are given the exact same voice. Having read the books many times, this was such a letdown and I could not finish listening to it.
A high adventure is turned into a dull video lecture from the 90’s.

Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

A light hearted easy listen that is comforting to turn on while doing busy work or on a long drive. Easy to pause and come back to anytime and made me laugh. Phillipa Soo was a joy to listen to as well.

Historia
A fiction podcast, based on the new novel 'After the Revolution' by Robert Evans. After The Revolution is set fifty years in the future, in a Texas wracked by civil war. We follow three characters: a "fixer" named Manny who leads reporters through the warzone, a young extremist named Sasha determined to join a militia called the Heavenly Kingdom, and an old veteran named Roland with a body full of U.S. army cyber-ware and a bunch of missing memories.

This has been a special joy to listen to given how and where I grew up - in extreme religion in the Midwest. The author has written something unique and narrated it wonderfully. Releasing it as a podcast so more people are able to listen is just one more reason to hold the author in high regard.

A Truly Fun Time
Revisado: 06-11-21
This was a genuine good time, and will go on my list of books to come back to when I need easy listening or a palate cleansing book when I’m not sure what I want to dive into next. It takes a specific talent to write purely fun books that are engaging and worth listening to repeatedly, and as a veteran I had an extra few laughs at the subtle vet humor. Bravo, Mr. Lowell!

Easy, fun listening
Revisado: 05-02-21
These books are my go to when I need a between-series-palate-cleanser or life is too stressful to add a book that might end sadly or on a cliff hanger. These are light hearted, feel-good fun. They’re predictable in a comfortable way, but even after quite a few books the storyline still has new paths to walk down and does not get boring.
I’ve spent years looking for a comforting palate cleansing book series that I can listen to for as long or short of a time as needed, and this series is absolutely perfect for it. Only need 8 hours of light hearted easy listening? You got it. Do you need 90 hours? There are nine books! Seriously worth the credit/money, I love them :)

The relationship of Royce and Hadrian never gets old - I am grateful that Sullivan brought them back for some more fun. The Easter eggs throughout the Riyira Chronicles make listening to Riyira Revelations again more fun, now that the backdrop is much more clear.
Reynolds is a great voice actor and his ability to bring personalities to life is superb.
The only thing that this book needs is a full-on sequel. This is my formal request to Sullivan to write us the story all the way up to Rise of Empire.

Clearly ya’ll need to Google how many books Stormlight will be
Revisado: 01-04-21
All these reviews crying about this book are ridiculous. Google it: Stormlight is set to be TEN books. This book is clearly being used to set us up for the next “chapter” of Roshar. No spoilers but...it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the author is careful to take time to make certain characters feel differently to the reader/listened than they have for the last three books - and with good reason if the story goes how it seems it might...
And anyone who is complaining about all of the mental illness addressing needs to get a grip and some compassion. I’m happy for you that you don’t suffer any mental illness, but give that a Google too - after 2020, mental illness diagnosis have skyrocketed. Depictions and discussions about them and their treatment are a breath of air - and make the characters feel believable instead of just perfect fantasy heroes.
Solid book. I laughed, I cried, it moved me, I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially with the mindset that there are SIX MORE BOOKS left to close out this epic tale.

The Wizard's Council of Tarador was supposed to tell young Koren Bladewell that he is a wizard. They were supposed to tell everyone that he is not a jinx, that all the bad things that happen around him are because he can't control the power inside him, power he doesn't know about. The people of his village, even his parents, are afraid of him, afraid he is cursed. That he is a dangerous, evil jinx.

Bored to tears
Revisado: 06-30-18
If there were one more absolutely pointless fifteen minute conversation I would have no longer been able to resist the urge to delete this book before completing it. I feel like I should get a refund for wasting that much of my life. Listened to book 2 hoping it would get better. It didn’t. In the end, the entire trilogy (without all of the random rambling discourse) could have been written into half a book. The fact that the author manages to drag out such an anticlimactic tale for three entire books is astounding. I haven’t seen so much completely useless dialogue shoved into a series since the Twilight saga came out, and lord knows I wish I could regain those hours of my youth I wasted on that particular collection of drivel.
Do not waste your credit. Please. The narrator is fabulous but he was left with a boring tale to tell.
