Oftentimes with my audiobooks I bounce back and forth between a physical copy of the writing and an audiobook. Unfortunately, the experience with this was not seem less like most tend to be, in my experience. At the beginning of any given chapter in the physical book could be matched up anywhere within the audiobook chapter, and the audiobook chapter numbers didn't typically marry up with the book chapter numbers either. I quite liked the narrator - her intonation, tone, and speech characteristics were all what I look for in a narrator, and she aced those standards for me. My only drawback of this audiobook is as already stated, but that's a big one for me. Other than that I really enjoyed the narrator and the author's content.

The narrator’s voice is quite clear and crisp as a person, but the volume and quality of the recording would periodically change. At first, I thought it was just my imagination because it isn’t overtly noticeable. I thought perhaps my earbuds were being finicky (which wireless earbuds can be), but after returning the audio back to my phone, then trying it from my computer, I experienced the same thing. This is an extremely persnickety detail, and I’m sure that it will not bother many listeners. In actuality, I hope it to NOT dissuade anyone from listening to this book because the amount of rich detail that is so passionately researched and expressed by Judy Batalion should not be missed by any WWII enthusiast or anyone remotely interested.

The story The Signalman isn’t actually narrated, it’s a mix of dramas going on. Perhaps I just missed that in the info, but wanted to mention it so someone else doesn’t make the same mistake I made when trying to purchase The Signalman for a class.

The performance was wonderful and engaging. However, not all the sentences from the text were actually narrated, so it made it difficult for me to interpret some of the underlying things for my class. It also was a bit confusing when the signalman spoke in first person since in the text the story is first person of the other gentleman throughout the entire thing. Loved the narrator though.
