Historia
Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.

The plot becomes increasingly improbable, but the characters are fun and the reader is excellent.

Another enjoyable story
Revisado: 03-05-24
I’ve enjoyed the first 2 books of the series, and plan to listen further. Great setting in pre-war Singapore, very likable heroine and a good cast of secondary characters makes this a fun and easy listen.

Historia
1936 in the Crown Colony of Singapore, and the British abdication crisis and rising Japanese threat seem very far away. When the Irish nanny looking after acting governor Palin's daughter dies suddenly - and in mysterious circumstances - mission school-educated local girl Su Lin - an aspiring journalist trying to escape an arranged marriage - is invited to take her place. But then another murder at the residence occurs and it seems very likely that a killer is stalking the corridors of Government House.

Story with great sense of place
Revisado: 12-27-23
I always enjoy a mystery set in an exotic locale, and this story delivered fun characters and a great sense of place.
I see some listeners didn’t like the narrator, but I thought she was very good. The accent takes a little getting used to, so maybe try a sample to be sure you can manage it, but having a reader who sounded exactly like the main character should enhanced the listening for me. I look forward to more books in this series.

This is a very enjoyable audiobook. It requires a little more attention than some, as the plot moves more slowing than a lot of contemporary fiction, but it’s all a joy to listen to.

It’s ok
Revisado: 04-19-23
I listened to a previous short book by this author that was rather a good listen, but this one was, on balance, uninteresting. The author has a knack for twists and turns, but not put to best use here. Great narrator, though.

Perfect novels
Revisado: 02-17-23
This is an excellent reading - voices and accents are differentiated without being cartoonish. The story is of course excellent. It draws you in with adventure and suspense, but is also a surprisingly deep study of character.

Brilliant use of different voices to bring to life this incredible book. Perhaps the subject seems daunting, and some passages are hard to listen to, but overall I found this book beautiful.

This is an excellent book to listen to. The story is easy to follow, the characters are strongly drawn, and the reader does a good job of differentiating the speakers. It’s a classic procedural set up, well-executed.

Golden age sci-fi is still fun
Revisado: 12-07-22
I loved this stuff as a kid, and it’s still a pleasure, even if the story is unsophisticated. Asimov tells a good tale, with twists and surprises, and with a good heart and a happy ending for our heroes.
