Historia
We all feel it—the distraction, the loss of focus, the addictive focus on the wrong things for too long. We bump into the zombies on their phones in the street, and sometimes they’re us. We stare in pity at the four people at the table in the restaurant, all on their phones, and then we feel the buzz in our pocket. Something has changed utterly: for most of human history, the boundary between public and private has been clear, at least in theory. Now, as Chris Hayes writes, “With the help of a few tech firms, we basically tore it down in about a decade.”

A helpful wake up call to a society that has turned over control of our minds to social media platforms and news outlets who have monetized the control of as many minds as possible. Well written and sourced. Definitely worth the read!

Historia
It began with a handful of East Berlin teens who heard the Sex Pistols on a British military radio broadcast to troops in West Berlin, and it ended with the collapse of the East German dictatorship. Punk rock was a life-changing discovery. The buzz-saw guitars, the messed-up clothing and hair, the rejection of society and the DIY approach to building a new one: In their gray surroundings, where everyone's future was preordained by some communist apparatchik, punk represented a revolutionary philosophy - quite literally, as it turned out.

East Berlin comes alive from the punk
Revisado: 04-23-25
This is a terrific view into the spirit of the East Berlin punk culture! Tim Mohr does a great job of telling the personal stories of those who helped free East Berlin from the fascist dictatorship. The reader really helped the words come alive. Well done. Don’t die in the waiting room of the future!

Funny, touching, and wonderfully thought-provoking, while also capturing the changes in America and American culture since World War II.

A must read for every American
Revisado: 11-10-22
A heavily sourced, fact-based look at the forces that divided the Republican party. As a lifelong conservative, I greatly appreciated the detailed historical description of the many unique personalities within Trump’s White House, each looking to achieve their own place in history, forgetting the idea of nation before self, resulted not only in the fracturing of a party, but also the fracturing of a nation. This is possibly the most important history book for any American student to read.

The true warrior spirit...
Revisado: 08-24-22
In The Warrior Within, the reader will find a unique look at many time-tested principles to harness the necessary inner strength to take on the chaos of life. The author’s ability to present these principles from his unique perspective as a Native American and USAF veteran opened my own eyes (as a native of Turtle Island) to the extraordinary warrior spirit found in the Native American culture. The author confronts the skewed view of “warriors” popularized by TV, movies, and video games of today, revealing the true description of a warrior spirit. DJ does more than share useful and practical principles…he has lived them throughout many challenges in his own life. This book will help you ignite (or re-ignite) your own warrior spirit, regardless of the current crucible in which you may find yourself. I highly recommend the audio version, which includes an informative, deeper conversation with the author. Great read!

Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.
