Historia
The charm of spending the Christmas holidays in South Wales, with its crumbling castles and ancient myths, seems the perfect distraction from the nightmares that have plagued literary agent Lyn Ravenshaw since the loss of her baby five years ago. Instead she meets an emotionally fragile young widow who's convinced that Lyn's recurring dreams have drawn her to Castle Farm for an important purpose - and she's running out of time.

narration kills the story
Revisado: 02-07-25
No clue how good or bad a story. The narration is so completely over-exaggerated, I can't get past it to enjoy the story. If you need a gentry English accent that bad... get the cast of Downton Abbey.

Disappointed
Revisado: 07-30-24
Like the series. With this book the plot was a little obvious and self righteous at times.

Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

I just can't with these Characters
Revisado: 03-12-24
I've tried to force myself to get to the mother's story, thinking things would improve and get interesting. I'm giving up at Chapter 11.
These people are not at all likeable. They need to get over themselves. I lost count of the times a character thinks "I shouldn't be so awful" ... and then excuses their own bad behavior, IS awful.... and then doesn't understand why they're so miserable (insert huge, rolled so hard I shifted into another dimension eye roll).
Just awful. I'll never get that 5 hours of my life back. Save yourself.... find a better read

Historia
World War II continues, and Ada and her brother, Jamie, are living with their loving legal guardian, Susan, in a borrowed cottage on the estate of the formidable Lady Thorton - along with Lady Thorton herself and her daughter. Life in the crowded cottage is tense enough, and then, quite suddenly, Ruth, a Jewish girl from Germany, moves in. A German? The occupants of the house are horrified. But other impacts of the war become far more frightening. As death creeps closer to their door, life and morality during wartime grow more complex.

Interesting theme; phenomenal narration
Revisado: 12-22-23
Love this series as a whole; the storyline is interesting, the characters have depth. A very subtle humour runs consistently through, despite some harsh events. The narration is absolute perfection.

Historia
The morning of January 12, 1888, was unusually mild, following a punishing cold spell. It was warm enough for the homesteaders of the Dakota Territory to venture out again and for their children to return to school without their heavy coats - leaving them unprepared when disaster struck. At the hour when most prairie schools were letting out for the day, a terrifying, fast-moving blizzard blew in without warning. Schoolteachers as young as 16 were suddenly faced with life-and-death decisions.

Lots of Soap Opera, Very little Blizzard
Revisado: 10-28-22
I don't think I'm going to be able to finish this. Everyone in this book is self-loathing, or arrogant, or bigoted, or crazy, or miserable or some other negative version of human. It's a soap opera with the blizzard as an afterthought. The real people with uplifting stories that could have been included... maybe for just a tiny mix of decent, intelligent humanity in the story... nah. Skip this. Listen to Laskin's Children's Blizzard. MUCH BETTER
