Historia
Bruno Bettelheim was one of the great child psychologists of the twentieth century and perhaps none of his books has been more influential than this revelatory study of fairy tales and their universal importance in understanding childhood development. Analyzing a wide range of traditional stories, Bettelheim shows how the fantastical, sometimes cruel, but always deeply significant narrative strands of the classic fairy tales can aid in our greatest human task, that of finding meaning for one's life.

I’ve wanted to read this for a long, long time
Revisado: 09-27-24
I was so thrilled to see it as an audio book, and even free with my subscription! It did not disappoint. Though very Freudian, still has a lot of excellent and valid insights. Makes me want to read more Maria von Franz - I wish those books were available in audio….

This is the most informative, useful, and helpful book I have listened to or read, in a long time. Many of the writing and performance tips are equally valuable for day to day life. Armed with this system, I feel like I stand a great chance of making people laugh, and that’s one of the best gifts to give anyone, so thank you, Mr. Dean.

Postmodernism is Anti-civilization
Revisado: 06-12-22
“Explaining Postmodernism” by Stephen Hicks—Highly recommended. Explains a LOT about who our ideological enemy is, and the tactics they are using. Very helpful. Also extremely concerning and disturbing.
Reality exists. Truth matters. Science and math are NOT subjective! Education in how to think rationally, appreciation of art and culture, should be our goals. Liberty and equality, the pursuit of happiness, everything guaranteed in the Bill of Rights of the US Constitution, “liberal capitalism” and “democratic liberalism” (terms the author uses for our government and culture over the last century or so), they work better than anything else to provide human rights, freedom, and more wealth and technology available for all than any other system. Language is supposed to be a means of communication, not a weapon used to destroy regardless of it’s falsity. And tolerating intolerance will lead to the end of the tolerant, and tolerance generally.
Hicks explains how the postmodernists, from Kant through Foucault and Rousseau, and many others, believed and wrote exactly the opposite. Postmodernists are trying to tear down and destroy everything I was raised to believe was - not only “Good,” - but “Real.” We see the evidence all around us of people who are trying to destroy our faith in a reality based world, who call their enemies pedophiles because they know the psychological damage that will do to someone, especially someone who is a truly good person who cares about child welfare, and those who have been trying to destroy our faith in our democratic election process. This post modern ideology is poison to our liberal democracy, and to world civilization and human survival.
Reality exists, and we can understand more and more of what that reality is, every day, with science, which then turns that knowledge and awareness of the universe’s rules into technology that saves lives and makes living easier and more enjoyable. Truth matters, and teaching our kids that truth matters, and to be inquisitive and curious, that matters. Our nation, and our freedom as citizens, is too valuable to allow it to be lost in favor of an undemocratic, totalitarian regime. Empirical evidence has value, it’s not just playing with language!
That’s what I stand for. I just hope desperately there are still enough rational people left in the world who believe science and math and evidence are vital to our survival as a species, and that art and literature and music elevate and enrich us, and should not be befouled and destroyed, to join the efforts to protect it all.
Vote this summer in your primaries, and this November in the midterms, and get two friends to the polls, too. Volunteer. Educate yourself, your friends and your family, especially in battleground states.
Let’s elect people who live in the real world and aren’t trying to use language as a weapon to destroy everything we value as a nation.
and please listen to, or read, the book. It’s extremely informative and a really important ideological juxtaposition that makes the battle lines pretty clear.
Thank you for your attention. — Vivienne
