Hardy’s Mormonism Keeps this book from greatness

Sullivan is good but made the mistake of hiring Hardy to co-write this. The kid can’t stop peppering in his Mormonism. It’s an annoying distraction to an otherwise helpful text. A faith is ultimately only as helpful as it is true. As such, the peppering isn’t helpful.

Isaacson gives us a glimpse into Jobs’ life through stories, but it’s a skin-deep treatment. I learned what Jobs did. I left wanting to know why he did it. The book is unable to intertwine concurrent events in Jobs’ life. So it constantly hops around from business to personal. Isaacson had a great opportunity to present the two in synchronicity but seems unable. I was also disappointed that he avoided any proximity to ideological or philosophical matters of any weight. It’s as if Isaacson is afraid to tell us what Jobs really believed for fear of alienating any reader (very un-Jobs-like).

The narrator mis-pronounces too many words not to be irritating. You leave wishing Isaacson read the whole thing after you hear his epilogue.

Overall this one could have been great. Sadly it wasn’t written to be great but to live on airport shelves for a little while. I hope another takes a stab at the Jobs bio.

Some gems but sad to see Mike bowing to DEI

First, there are some helpful takeaways here. I plan to implement some of the advice. I devour Mike’s books. But hearing him plug DEI and certain acronym “communities” was disappointing. This sort of mentality has harmed many a work place cultures and I found it out of character for him.

Also, might be an audible issue but I found the recording quality was noticeably lower than usual. Anyway, hope to see Mike keep doing his thing.

The reader does a very good job. One can hear the heart and love of St. Theresa in her voice. It is read prayerfully. I am grateful to all who produced this audiobook.

As for the text, it is underrated among Theresa’s works. I consider it a must read for any founder of a business or family. There is so much practical wisdom in this book, and the splendid order of a Catholic mind is on full display for us. Worth your credit and then some.

If you’re wondering how a book published in 1936 is sharing anecdotes of Paul Harvey and Stevie Wonder, no, Dale Carnegie is not a time traveler. This is version is the one updated by his daughter for cultural relevance. I wish this was listed by Audible. Bad form.

But some decent EOS gems to be mined. Recommend traction but can’t say I would recommend this one.

I tried, but it’s a cringe-fest. Sadly, the author doesn’t understand Thiel or his world. If you can’t respect your subject, you shouldn’t attempt to criticize him - much less write his biography. While this book is essentially a cheap editorial, the author’s insular worldview has rendered him incapable of forming opinions worthy of your attention. His community college-level tropes about white supremacy and extremism grow tiresome out of the gate. Had he forced himself to read Girard more than his one paragraph account demanded, he might have been able to scratch beneath the surface of Thiel’s ideology. He clearly didn’t. There are more perspicacious treatments of Thiel such as Holiday’s “Conspiracy,” and especially “Zero to One” itself. Chafkin reveals himself as a less than bright political hack attempting to kick at a great man’s shins. Apart from a few chuckles at the attempt, there’s nothing to appreciate here.
