Historia
The year is 1949, the city London. Amidst the smog of the capital stumbles Dennis Knuckleyard, a hapless eighteen year-old employed by a second-hand bookshop. One day, on an errand to acquire books for sale, Dennis discovers a novel that simply does not exist. It is a fictitious book, a figment from another novel. Yet it is physically there in his hands. How? Dennis has stumbled on a book from the Great When, a magical version of London beyond time and space, where reality blurs with fiction and concepts such as Crime and Poetry are incarnated as wondrous, terrible beings.

A struggle for the first two thirds
Revisado: 11-09-24
Much of the first half comes off as decorative, pretentious word salad but I had to hang in because I know the genius of Moore all too well. The last third is quite engaging, so much so that I will be re-listening soon. For now, though, I can only give it a middling review.

Revisado: 09-25-24
The structure was disenteresting. The story fairly boring. And the narrators of varying caliber. The one performing Lysander was absolutely dreadful. Best to leave the first trilogy alone and walk away.

From Moon Unit Zappa, the daughter of musical visionary Frank Zappa, comes a memoir of growing up in her unconventional household in 1970s Los Angeles, coming of age in the Hollywood Hills in the 1980s as the “Valley Girl,” gaining momentum as an accidental VJ on a new network called MTV, and finding herself after losing her father, then her mother, and the testing of her most important relationships.

Very conflicted on this one
Revisado: 09-02-24
Big fan of Frank. He actually came off better than expected. And Gail - so much worse than the awful person I already knew she was. Dweezil rang true. Could care less about the shallow and self serving Ahmet and Diva. The conflict comes in where I love Moon's reading voice and honesty - but she also comes off as an incredibly naive nitwit who desperately latches onto whatever metaphysical or pop psychology nonsense she comes across right to the end. Very frustrating.

Historia
In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining.

Historia
The superhero comic books that Marvel Comics has published since 1961 are, as Douglas Wolk notes, the longest continuous, self-contained work of fiction ever created: over half a million pages to date, and still growing. The Marvel story is a gigantic mountain smack in the middle of contemporary culture. Thousands of writers and artists have contributed to it. Everyone recognizes its protagonists: Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men. Eighteen of the hundred highest-grossing movies of all time are based on parts of it. Yet not even the people telling the story have read the whole thing.

A tool buried in performative identity politics
Revisado: 03-14-22
A decent tool for total noobs to access the sprawling tapestry of the Marvel Universe, but so much time is wasted on out if context opinions of social progress over the history of comics without realizing that it's reinforcing Marvel's current strategy of using shallow, performative identity politics as a marketing tool. It's a trap a lot of well meaning people fall into. The last section's intolerable focus on Squirrel Girl is saved only by a touching tale of father son bonding.

Good book nearly ruined by Geode.
Revisado: 01-28-22
The Geode character was handled very poorly, being merely a vehicle for achingly poor puns and "rock jokes." Otherwise a fine novel with a ton of action down the stretch.
