Historia
The war is over, and Germany in ruins. Posted to an Allied-run Hamburg, reporter Georgie Young returns to the country she fled seven years prior – at the onset of the conflict – to find it unrecognisable. Amidst the stark horrors of a bombed-out city crumbling under the weight of millions of displaced souls, she discovers pockets of warmth: a violinist playing amidst the wreckage, couples dancing in the streets, and a nation trying to make amends.

I wish I had purchased the book. I am engrossed in this series and a fan of the author’s. I agree with the earlier reviewer who wished for a more experienced narrator. I was glad to find audible version available upon release though.

American physicist Dr. Else Jensen refuses to leave Copenhagen and abandon her research-her life's dream. Loved narrator & story
Revisado: 02-14-23
Unlike some other readers, I thought the narrator was outstanding. I always love Sarah’s books but was a bit worried that this historical setting is too well known. I stuck with the story and didn’t actually find knowing the big picture history to be distracting at all. The way the Danes pulled together is such an illuminating tale, everyone should know it.

From the author of the “engrossing” (People) and “poignant” (Booklist) international best seller The Room on Rue Amélie comes a remarkable and moving story of love, danger, and betrayal: two women in France in the darkest days of World War II and another in present-day America on a quest to uncover the secret that connects them.

Complex, but beautiful
Revisado: 08-26-19
Stick with this one to the very end. Sometimes I grew impatient with the way the tale jumps from person to person over a long time period. As it all comes together toward the end, the story and lessons are enormously satisfying and beautiful. I’m very glad I found this book. The audio version is excellent.

A Rare and Important Perspective
Revisado: 08-22-18
This book is part of a fictional series based on the true experiences of the authors grandparents, who resisted evil in WWII Germany at great personal cost. I haven’t found many other books that share this very important point of view. The story is as engaging as a spy thriller, but also very substantive and historically accurate.
I loved the narrator and was so glad Audible finally started bringing out this author’s work! Though I previously read the entire series, I enjoyed listening to the Audible versions while walking as much, if not more. Give this series a try! The author’s War Girls series also is excellent. I wish Audible would bring that series out with the same narrator.

Historia
Decades ago, as Nazi planes dominated the sky, Lily Verner made a terrible choice. She's tried to forget, but now an unexpected event pulls her back to the 1940s British countryside. She finds herself remembering the brilliant colors of the silk she helped to weave at her family's mill, the relentless pressure of the worsening war, and the kind of heartbreaking loss that stops time.

Engrossing
Revisado: 01-30-17
I liked both the characters & story. Personally I enjoyed the sound of the narrator's voice and thought she fit the tale well, but some reviews reach a different conclusion. Thus, if you have the chance to check a sample, you might want to do so. If you are a person who is irritated by the narrator, I recommend you still give the book a try if you enjoy fiction set in WWII. I listened to the story while walking and found it perfect for keeping me engrossed & motivated on a cold winter day.

Historia
Nearly a half century into being a feminist and legal pioneer, something funny happened to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The octogenarian won the Internet. Across America, people who weren't even born when Ginsburg made her name are tattooing themselves with her face, setting her famously searing dissents to music, and making viral videos in tribute.

A good book to read or listen to In this divisive year. RBG has so much to teach us all! I have watched the Justice tell her story many times and thought I might be disappointed by this book--I was pleasantly surprised that the audiobook is very well done. Great listen during walks and story that never ceases to inspire me.

As others have said, I agreed the start was quite slow, but the complex story rand excellent writing reward those who persist. If you enjoy WWII historical fiction, give this one s try. Also narrator is superb!

Historia
Based on years of archival research and interviews with the last surviving aides and Roosevelt family members, Nigel Hamilton offers a definitive account of FDR's masterful-and underappreciated-command of the Allied war effort. Hamilton takes listeners inside FDR's White House Oval Study - his personal command center - and into the meetings where he battled with Churchill about strategy and tactics and overrode the near mutinies of his own generals and secretary of war.
